Salary: $18.86 - $25.50 Hourly Location : Jacksonville, NC Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: Detention Officer Fall 2024 Department: Sheriff's Office Opening Date: 08/05/2024 Job Description This position will perform responsible protective service and human support work ensuring the care and security of inmates at the County Jail; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Sergeant Jailer. Position ResponsibilitiesMaintaining jail security; serving meals; transporting inmates. (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. - Patrols jail area periodically to insure security and maintain order.
- Searches and processes inmates in and out of jail; supervise and check on lockdown inmates.
- Supervises inmates during meals, personal hygiene and related activities for conformance to institutional rules, regulations and procedures; picks up meals; package and distribute medication to inmates as prescribed or directed.
- Escorts and safeguards inmates to cell; moves inmates around within jail facility; move inmates for court, attorney visit, probation visit, releases, transport to various offices or other locations; checks on inmates' physical condition; performs shake downs.
- Assists with visitations; searches cells; changes linens; performs laundry services.
- Assists with booking inmates and release of inmates; inventory property of new inmates; transports inmates to jail.
- Prepares routine records on inmates; performs general clerical duties associated with jail operations; communicate to incoming shift all incidents that occurred on the previous shift.
- Ensures the care and maintenance of quarters.
- Records visits; inspects items brought into the jail; checks incoming and outgoing mail; answers telephone.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Qualifications General knowledge of the security, rules, regulations and procedures of the institution; general knowledge of the practices of modern penology as related to the supervision and care of persons under institutionalized restraint; ability to enforce institutional rules firmly and fairly; ability to detect potential behavior problems of inmates; ability to detect the early symptoms of common health problems; ability to carry out oral and written directions accurately; ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility; ability to supervise the activities of large groups of inmates; ability to prepare records and reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. Education, Experience, and Special Requirements Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school is required for this position. Applicants who are selected to continue with the hiring process will be required to take the CASAS Test at Coastal Carolina Community College. After completion of the CASAS Test, applicants will be required to pass an agility test. This test must be completed in 20 minutes or less and consists of:
- 10 push-ups and 10 sit ups
- 40 foot bear crawl
- Staircase: 2 times both sides (6 step staircase)
- Repeat 10 push-ups and 10 sit ups
Applicants who successfully complete the agility test will be scheduled for an Oral Board interview. Those selected to move forward will be invited for a Command Board interview. Applicants who successfully pass the interviews will be scheduled for psychological testing, medical testing and a drug screening which will be administered at an agency located outside of Onslow County. In order to be considered for this position, your final transcript showing the date that your degree was awarded and/or any required certificates or licenses must be uploaded with your application even if you are a current employee or we have received it with a previous application. Upon successful completion of the NC Detention Officer Certification course, within 12 months of hire, candidates will move to Certified Detention Officer status with a 4% pay increase. Compensation will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.
