Job Title: Development EditorSalary: $77,700 - $82,000Location: New York/New York State/HybridContract: Permanent/Full Time (35 hours per week)Are you an effective, well-organised, and proactive professional with a keen eye for detail? Do you embrace change and wish to be part of a highly collaborative team whose work impacts millions across the world?As a Development Editor at Cambridge University Press & Assessment, you will help deliver our ambitious Higher Education textbook publishing programme and become part of an innovative culture that is always looking for new ways to solve the challenges we face.About the role:In this role, you will project manage a minimum of 15 textbooks across Humanities and STM subject disciplines. You will work collaboratively with authors, publishers, content management, and other stakeholders to deliver market-leading, pedagogically robust textbooks and digital products of the highest quality. You will manage your workload proactively and strategically, working to tight deadlines on multiple projects with competing priorities.You will coach your authors on manuscript writing and preparation best practices while guiding them through the publishing process. With a focus on ensuring commercial success, you will provide development/structural editorial feedback, organize reviews to inform editorial guidance, and ensure the project is delivered on time and within budget while meeting market needs. You will embrace change and drive innovation forward to meet the evolving needs of our customers across the globe.You will also:Ensure project milestones are met according to schedule and specification, and report on your projects regularly to all relevant stakeholders.Benchmark projects against leading competitors to inform the development plan of your books and ensure content and pedagogy is appropriate for level and market.Work with Sales, Marketing, and Editorial to develop and hone unique selling points and a market-driven message. You will create persuasive marketing copy, such as blurbs, and be able to present your titles to internal Sales and Marketing teams in a manner that helps them understand what is unique about the product.Developmentally edit first and new edition textbook manuscripts from initial sample chapters to final draft, examining key manuscript elements such as chapter structure, layout, pedagogical features, artwork, and clarity of writing. You will diagnose any recurring writing issues, identify accessibility concerns, and propose solutions via sample edits and constructive feedback reports.Conduct market research and peer reviewing of manuscripts to provide market-relevant and evidence-based guidance to authors on necessary edits to ensure textbooks meet market needs.Guide authors as they craft their illustration program, making sure figures are drawn to a high standard and that all permissions have been cleared for images obtained from a third-party source.Provide guidance to authors on preparing a manuscript for handover to production, including carrying out checks of file types, organising cast offs, briefing text and cover designs, and writing detailed briefs to Content Management about the needs of each title.Provide first-rate author care, proactively maintaining and growing your relationship with authors and ensuring they have a positive experience publishing with us.Understand and provide support for the development of supplemental online resources (such as lecture slides, test banks, and solutions manuals) that accompany textbooks.Develop learning design expertise to design and support the development of end-to-end learning journeys and curricula that are based on best-in-class content, effective pedagogy, and best-fit eLearning tools and related software.About you:As our next Development Editor, you will have previous experience in an editorial role running your own projects, preferably with a background in textbook and/or educational publishing. Experience with Learning Design or working on online courses is also a bonus, but not required.You demonstrate strong time management skills, identify potential project risks early, and facilitate solutions. You have a proven ability to foster positive and collaborative relationships with stakeholders and can deliver feedback in a persuasive and constructive manner.
