Job Opportunity: Digital Archivist (Grant-Funded, Temporary Position)

Key Details

Location: Downtown Dallas

Pay: $25/hour

Work Hours: Flexible, based on employee needs and library hours (25-30 hours/week)

Library Schedule:

  • Monday: Closed

  • Tuesday: 9 a.m.-8 p.m.

  • Wednesday: 9 a.m.5 p.m.

  • Thursday: 9 a.m.-8 p.m.

  • Friday: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

  • Saturday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

  • Sunday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Position Overview

The Digital Archivist will support the digitization and research of historic photographs and materials in the Juanita Craft Collection. Responsibilities include preparing archival materials for digitization, scanning photographs and scrapbooks following established standards, managing digital files, and creating metadata to make the digital objects catalog-ready. Additional tasks include supporting social media and newsletter posts and assisting with exhibit creation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Digitize historic materials, adhering to archival best practices for handling and storage

  • Create descriptive metadata using current standards to ensure accurate retrieval

  • Conduct thorough research using primary and secondary sources to enhance metadata

  • Assist with promotional tasks, including social media and newsletter posts, and exhibit creation

  • Rehouse and organize digitized physical items

  • Compile materials information, tracking progress to prepare reports

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with advanced scanning equipment

  • Knowledge of metadata schema (e.g., Dublin Core) and descriptive standards

  • Ability to collect, organize, and interpret information for metadata creation

  • Previous archival experience or relevant coursework

  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting both print and cursive documents

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to recognize and correct errors

  • Self-motivation and the ability to work independently

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Punctuality and strong time-management skills

  • Ability to handle repetitive tasks while maintaining high standards

Qualifications:

  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

  • High School Diploma or GED
