Job Description:

Digital Twin Electrical Engineer

Locations: Onsite in Columbia, South Carolina (Hybrid 3/2)

What We Do:

Integer Technologies is an applied research and product development company founded by scientists and engineers with a passion for technology and national security. We perform R&D on next-generation systems and technologies for the Department of Defense (DoD) and other U.S. Government agencies, turning research into impactful products with military and commercial applications. Our core portfolio of research includes projects in power & energy systems, unmanned systems (with an emphasis on maritime systems), digital engineering, and advanced manufacturing.

Our power & energy systems portfolio supports the DoD's electrification of platforms, such as Navy ships. Our research involves hybrid and electric propulsion systems, large energy storage devices, power converters, autonomy, digital twins, and integration with mission systems to achieve fast and reliable power system response.

About the Role:

The Digital Twin Engineer role requires passion and drive to create and maintain virtual representations of multi-domain/Multiphysics physical systems to be used for applications such as health monitoring, diagnostics, prognostics, and advanced controls. The Digital Twin Engineer should understand how to identify important features and dynamic phenomena of a physical system, create appropriate computer models of these systems which incorporate the relevant features, dynamics, and application-critical behaviors, write software to connect the models to the physical systems through live streaming data feedback channels, and update the models in both real time and faster than real time. A successful candidate will understand how to balance the trade-offs between model fidelity, streaming data sampling rate, digital twin execution time step, domain representation integrity, and computational resources, to develop a family of component and system level digital twins appropriate to a variety of applications. The Digital Twin Engineer will work both individually and in concert with other engineers, subject-matter experts, and program management to devise suitable digital twin strategies (including physics-based and behavioral approaches) and subsequently to produce robust, reliable digital twins for several customers across government and industry.

The successful candidate must demonstrate an attitude for growth, continuously expanding their knowledge and skill to remain on the cutting-edge. The candidate must be organized and detail oriented. This role may involve interacting with customers whose needs are constantly evolving and are sometimes difficult to articulate; thus, strong communication skills will also be beneficial.

Integer is a science and technology research and development organization. As such, much of our work entails developing solutions for complex problems that presently have no known solutions. To achieve internal and customer project goals all candidates must be able to perform research, understand new concepts from other engineering disciplines on advanced and complex topics, and document findings in a way that is easy for non-experts to understand.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Base salary which exceeds local & national industry averages.
  • Integer fully covers medical, prescription, vision, and dental insurance costs for the employee and dependents. Integer's standard plan pays 100% of health insurance premiums for your entire family from a well-known national insurer, saving employees thousands of dollars annually.
  • Year-end performance-based bonuses.
  • 401(k) with company matching that vest immediately; no funny business.
  • Paid vacation.
  • Paid sick leave.
  • Paid holidays.
  • Relocation assistance available.

Company Perks:

  • Startup culture with the stability of a large company. Integer's business plan has years of time phased contracted work, alleviating the would-be risk from a traditional small company.
  • Direct access to company leadership, prioritization of people over process, and a stellar team with a shared desire for personal and professional growth.
  • Friendly atmosphere where people enjoy not only their work and what they are creating but enjoy helping each other as well.
  • Bottomless coffee, Espressos & Ping-Pong

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary engineering team to conduct research and to develop and leverage models and simulations of navy ship integrated power systems at varied fidelity.
  • Manipulate data from multiple sources in an energy management framework to quantify and predict impacts of the power system state on high-level mission outcomes.
  • Apply and learn as needed multiple algorithm and software development languages (e.g., Python, Java, R, C, C++ …), libraries, and platforms (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink, …) as necessary to collaborate with the Company's software development and modeling & simulation teams.
  • Provide domain knowledge for distributed systems and systems engineering including technical analysis, software development, and product development.
  • Articulate research progress and requirements to both technical and non-technical personnel (including customers, government representatives, project managers, etc.) in both written and oral formats for the purpose of ensuring project stakeholders understand how a developed product functions.
  • Use prior experience and hands-on software development skills to develop various software-based products for both internal and customer projects.
  • Work with project managers and articulate development time estimates.
  • Participate in collaborative software development efforts in a Linux environment.

Core Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, or similar technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated mastery of at least one computer modeling & simulation environment (MATLAB/Simulink preferred).
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C++, Java).
  • Experience integrating physics-based models with external assets.
  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in one or more of the following technical areas:
  • Electrical Power and Energy Systems including electric machinery, gas turbines, diesel generators, propulsion systems, batteries, power electronics, switchgear, etc.
  • Cooling and Ventilation Systems including heat exchangers, pumps, valves, piping, expansion tanks, fans, etc.
  • Fuel Delivery Systems for marine applications
  • Machinery Control Systems including sensing, communication, and system level controls for electric plants, machinery, and electromechanical systems
  • Must have the ability to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship. Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • A graduate degree (Masters/PhD) in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar technical discipline. A record of relevant industry experience, technical leadership, publications, or other recognitions for expertise may substitute for an advanced degree.
  • Deep technical knowledge of simulation solver technologies and numerical integration methods or awareness of industry best practices for robust numerical convergence.
  • Experience using software version control (Git) and working in an agile coding environment with peer collaboration and code reviews.
  • Experience with:
  • Ship power systems, microgrid power systems, and/or integrated power system concepts.
  • Developing software in Linux-based environments.
  • Writing software to automate and schedule batches of simulations.
  • Objective functions and optimal control of dynamic systems.
  • Data-driven predictive maintenance, prognostics, an/or health estimation for power system machinery and equipment
