This position will serve as the system-wide Director of Risk Management for WVUHS, its subsidiaries, and affiliated clinical practice plans, to include mitigation of professional liability claims, incidents, trends and related risks. This position will work closely with the WVUHS excess carriers to implement recommendations or requirements to satisfy risk control and underwriting needs, as well as those of System leadership and Legal department. The position will report to the Assistant Vice President, Corporate Insurance and Risk Management, and will assist with risk management functions of Augusta Insurance Company, LTD., self-insured programs, and commercial insurance across WVU Medicine.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Bachelor's degree in nursing or medical-related field

EXPERIENCE:

1. Seven (7) years of experience in a healthcare setting.

2. Three (3) years of experience directly working for or with professional liability insurance carriers or captives.

3. Five (5) years of experience in claims and related legal proceedings.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Master's degree in nursing or medical-related field.

2. Registered Nurse License.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Five (5) years of experience directly working in Risk Management in a hospital or health system setting.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Analyze claims and loss runs across WVUHS to identify and implement necessary risk control communication and programs across system hospitals and healthcare specialties.

2. Identification, risk evaluation and coordination of corrective action implementation related to potential medical malpractice risk or claims issues.

3. Designs and implements processes that identify risk exposure and classify, measure and manage insurable risks.

4. Provide consultation and support to hospital risk managers.

5. Chair the WVUHS Risk Management Affinity Group.

6. Review medical malpractice claim during intake for correct captive and/or carrier reporting.

7. Functions as primary liaison & contact for the WVUHS Patient Safety Organization(ECRI), managing access and reporting responsibilities for all hospitals and locations, currently provided by ECRI. 8. Function as the on-call Director of Risk Management for WVUHS System Medical Group.

9. Interface with legal counsel for medical malpractice defense and related regulatory concerns.

10. CRM Liaison with excess and reinsurance carriers' personnel on clinical risk related requirements or claim issues.

11. Monitors and works closely with clinical departments to ensure compliance with WVUHS procedures and policies.

12. Provide and/or coordinates intervention and education related to risk management issues to promote safe work practices and quality care and services.

13. Responsible for facilitating retrospective and prospective, proactive loss prevention harm reduction risk program.

14. Completes clinical and enterprise risk assessments and conducts proactive educational sessions and presentations with clinical staff to support risk recognition and risk reduction.

15. Represents Risk Management in investigation and analysis of root causes, patterns, or trends that could result in compensatory or sentinel events. Provides leadership in the identification and implementation of corrective action plans where appropriate.

16. Develop reports and presentations to effectively provide the clinical or business case for risk control or corrective action plans to hospital leadership, captive and financial groups.

17. Actively participate in, or facilities, committees related to clinical risk management, patient safety, and quality improvement.

18. Participates in the WVUHS Workplace Violence Prevention Program
