Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) is passionate about providing exceptional health care to all, especially underserved communities with limited health care options. Founded by a Latina grandmother/community advocate over 50 years ago in Barrio Logan, FHCSD has grown into one of the largest community health systems in the country. With over 62 sites, over 227,000 patients, and over 417,000 visits last year, we provide a wide variety of health care and outreach services to a very diverse patient population. Family Health Centers of San Diego is looking for a Director, Government Relations who manages relationships of local, state, and federal governments to benefit the programs, foster the growth and promote the financial sustainability of Family Health Centers of San Diego. Works collaboratively with Community Affairs, and the Development Department.

Responsibilities:

Legislative

  • Responsible for developing public support for legislative agendas.
  • Generates public support for relevant issues.
  • Advocates and educates elected officials to support policy changes through appropriate channels and maintaining current knowledge of government changes and actions.
  • Support FHCSD's government relations strategies.
  • Fosters engagement of government stakeholders using public relations and public policy materials and strategies.
  • Strategize ways to achieve impact in areas of public policy most vital to FHCSD.
  • Develop action-oriented, collaborative relationships and campaigns that result in successful outcomes.
  • Review and monitor local and state-level legislation and administrative regulations affecting FHCSD patient community and prepare briefs to update leadership and staff.
  • Communications

  • Develops reports related to campaign results and press coverage.
  • Conducts regular and proactive media outreach to local print, online, television, and radio outlets related to FHCSD issues and priorities.
  • Collaborates with the Development Department in developing, drafting, and publishing the Adelante newsletters, and other materials benefiting FHCSD stakeholders and programs.
  • Collaborations

  • Establish, foster, and strengthen relations with relevant businesses and civic organizations, community organizations and leaders, and the public to build and sustain support for FHCSD's mission, goals, and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare organizations, consumers, key stakeholders, other federally qualified healthcare centers, through activities of CPCA, CHA, CMA, and others to promote access to healthcare for low-income San Diegans.
  • Resource Development

  • Assist Development Department in the cultivation of prospective donors.
  • Assist in the execution of stewardship and fundraising events as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in public relations, marketing, communications, international relations, public health, public policy, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience working in a nonprofit or healthcare setting.
  • Experience developing correspondence, executive briefings, giving presentations, and testifying, and press releases.
  • Skilled in giving oral presentations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite.
  • Videography or photography experience a plus, but not required.
  • Demonstrated impeccable writing skills. Example of writing skills through presentation of writing samples required.
  • Knowledge of and experience in traditional and digital public and government relations tactics.
  • Possess a high degree of tact, diplomacy, judgement, and sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively liaise with media.
  • Ability to manage multiple, complex projects simultaneously.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English highly desired, but not required.
  • Professional presentation, a must.
  • Ability and means to travel as needed in a timely manner within San Diego County, to locations that may have limited access to public transportation; proof of liability and property damage insurance on vehicle used is required. DRIVER REQUIREMENTS: Licensed for a minimum of 3 years; No more than 2 violations and/or accidents within 3 years; No vehicle related suspensions/reinstatements.
  • This position is based in San Diego and is not a remote position. Some travel is required.

    In the spirit of pay transparency, we are excited to share the base range for this position, exclusive of fringe benefits or potential bonuses: 111,621.00 - 170,676.00.

    If you are hired at Family Health Centers of San Diego, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, jurisdictional requirements, skills, education, and/or experience. In addition to these factors - we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as a part of any final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is what we reasonably expect to pay for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth. We also offer a generous compensation and benefits package.
