The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

Oversees development and implementation of effective communication plans that support the medical center and academic programs and policies of the University of Rochester as it relates to its Human Resources department. A position with enterprise reach across the entire University, the Director works closely with the AVP, URMC Communications and the AVP, University Communications to provide leadership and counsel to HR and University executives to inform complex and sensitive decisions and/or projects, and develops/builds support for communications strategies that help achieve stated goals. The Director also serves as the first point of contact for HR issues management, collaborating with leadership in appropriate University Units to assure open and transparent communications, and escalating as necessary to senior leadership.

Part of the Human Resources leadership team, the Director works with HR program managers to evaluate communications resources and recommend additions/changes as necessary to optimize faculty and staff understanding and engagement of the full spectrum of services offered by Human Resources. Supports the University and URMC?s comprehensive and ongoing efforts for diversity and inclusion, and aligns all communications programs to underscore the institution's Meliora Values: equity, leadership, integrity, openness, respect, and accountability.

The Director also supervises communication and change management positions and oversees day-to-day communications activities that support awareness and understanding of HR strategy, priorities, products, policies and programs, using the bi-annual employee engagement and other methods to measure progress and develops changes to content and/or channels as necessary. Knowledge and experience in change management strategy is essential.

Responsibilities General Purpose: Oversees development and implementation of an integrated and effective communication plan that supports the HR Strategic plan and the associated strategic initiatives, policies and planning of the University of Rochester Human Resources department. This position works closely with other communications teams across the enterprise including the University and URMC communications teams. The Director provides leadership in communicating complex and sensitive decisions and/or projects, and develops/builds support for communications strategies that help achieve stated goals. The Director serves as the first point of contact for HR issues management, collaborating with leadership in appropriate University units to assure open and transparent communications and escalating issues as necessary to senior leadership. As part of the Human Resources leadership team, the Director works with HR program leaders to evaluate communications resources and recommend additions/changes as necessary to optimize faculty and staff understanding and engagement of the full spectrum of services offered by Human Resources. Develops the strategy and supports the University and URMC's comprehensive and ongoing efforts related to recruitment marketing and aligns all communications programs to the University's strategic plan underscoring the institution's Meliora Values: equity, leadership, Integrity, openness, respect, and accountability. Supports the communication strategy for the bi-annual employee engagement survey, monitors HR website metrics, data and other methods to measure progress and develops changes to strategy, content and/or channels as necessary. Supervises communications staff in HR supporting their efforts in, awareness of and understanding of HR strategy, priorities, policies and programs. Responsibilties: Develops an overarching strategic communication plan tailored to various audiences, developing and implementing strategies and tactics for complex projects, such as major HR institutional changes and integrates this plan with the change management framework to assure communications supports successful adoption of the change. Works with HR Communications team to assure timely and successful execution of the plan. Serves as a communications consultant and advisor providing insight to how decisions might be perceived among various University stakeholders and recommending alternative solutions when appropriate. Ensures the communications plan establishes a broad-based understanding of the scope of the Human Resources Department, and how it interacts with the various business units of the University. Develops a firm grasp of the University's culture, and how various programs align within the work environments of various medical specialties, schools and divisions. Recommends ways to improve alignment and/or cascade best practices for HR communications among all units as appropriate. Collaborates closely with various departments to ensure consistency in messaging and standards. Oversees the development of a communications infrastructure to support efficient and targeted communications at all levels of management throughout the University, as well as channels to reach all faculty and staff as needed. Meets regularly with leadership to align activities within the broader framework of the University community. Identifies a range of formats and successful approaches that can be used in communications efforts, including, but not limited to articles, social media, videos, emails, PowerPoints, brochures, posters, etc. Actively participates in knowledge sharing and the adoption of best practices to enhance communications. Develops a strategy for ensuring the HR website is regularly updated and maintains a high quality digital presence with content in the overall context of the HR Modernization framework and the HR strategic plan. Assures all communications work in support of HR programs, is high quality, timely, and is shared through all appropriate channels within the various business units of the University and URMC, including but not limited to the HR website, email newsletters, printed and electronic publications, websites, video channels, social media, and media relations. Evaluates and makes recommendations regarding opportunities to expand storytelling formats, techniques, and applications. Works with HR program Directors to evaluate and/or unify communications. Manages and executes an individual portfolio of communications projects for extremely complex and sensitive projects that impact all University faculty and staff, and tying it to the overall HR and University Strategic Plan. Develops and executes communications plans to support major HR-based programs. Work includes synthesizing complex and/or sensitive information into key messages, identifying target audiences and matching to appropriate channels, and infusing the information into a variety of content including emails, presentations, websites, talking points, FAQs, videos, brochures, bulletins, fliers and other materials. Leads marketing and communications plans for the recruitment of talent working in collaboration with talent acquisition and UR and URMC communications. Develops and writes content aimed at Internal and external audiences including, but not limited to, social media posts, email memos, PowerPoint presentations, newsletter articles, website copy, video scripts, online news and feature stories and infographics. Collaborates with University and Medical Center Communications and HR leadership in developing communications responses to issues. Provides supervision and coaching to ensure direct reports are working efficiently and effectively, and activities are aligned with the Identified strategies of HR. Makes recommendations on changes to staffing as necessary. Builds a coalition of support among communicants and administrative professionals throughout the institution to help facilitate timely, effective HR communications and making full use of existing Internal communications channels. Ensures budgets assigned for communications activities are met. Other duties as assigned Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in communications, Journalism, or related field - 5-10 years of experience in a strategic communications role - Experience overseeing HR/Internal communications (preferred) - 3 years of supervisory or management experience (preferred) - or equivalent combination of education and experience - Strong written, oral, and Interpersonal communications skills; must be comfortable coaching senior executives and offer differing points of view in group settings. - Ability to work Independently and successfully within a matrixed work culture. - Extraordinary ability to deal with multiple, competing priorities in a deadline--oriented environment with minimal supervision. - Proven ability to inject creativity into content and matching ideas with effective, engaging, and achievable storytelling approaches. - Solid understanding of traditional communications and publications technologies; a forward-looking approach toward emerging communications platforms in digital and social media. - Demonstrated proficiency in writing and editing content based on target audience, with ability to analyze, condense, and synthesize information - Proven ability to lead high-performing teams. - Ability to oversee large-scale, complex projects, make decisions and design and implement new communication strategies - Strong organizing and project management skills The University of Rochester is committed to fostering, cultivating, and preserving a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion to advance the University's mission to Learn, Discover, Heal, Create - and Make the World Ever Better.
