PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director, Human Resources is responsible for overseeing all Human Resources policies, programs, functions, and initiatives for the Institute, ensuring AFI is in full compliance with applicable laws and regulations. This includes HR operations and administration, recruitment and onboarding, training and development, employee relations, performance management, labor relations, union contract negotiations, and campus safety programs. In addition, the Director, Human Resources will partner with Senior Management on high-level strategic goals and projects.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

HR Operations and Administration

  • Plan, direct and supervise all activities related to the administration and maintenance of HR policies, programs, functions, and activities.
  • Oversee HR staff in the daily administration of all HR services, including recruitment, job classifications, performance evaluations, learning and development, employee relations, workers compensation, leaves of absence, employee benefits, and HR compliance.
  • In collaboration with the Chief Resource Officer and the Senior Director, Business Affairs, coordinate all legal issues for both the Los Angeles and Silver (Maryland) sites.
  • Oversee the handling of negotiation and administration of insurance programs (Workers' Compensation, Health and Welfare, etc.).
  • Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and employment law; apply this knowledge to recommend changes in policy, practice, and resources to the Chief Resource Officer.

Recruitment and Onboarding

  • Manage the recruitment and onboarding processes for AFI.
  • Partner with Department Heads and/or managers to support recruitment strategies and candidate selection.
  • Perform job assessment and analysis on all new openings to ensure compliance with AFI's compensation philosophy and position matrix.
  • In collaboration with the Chief Resource Officer, update and maintain compensation and position matrix.

Employee Relations and Performance Management

  • Act as the primary HR point of contact for all employees regarding AFI policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and advise Senior Management and Department Heads on human resources related employee issues.
  • Monitor and advise managers on the progressive discipline system and performance improvement processes.
  • Lead the implementation of the Employee Performance Review (EPR) system and development programs.

Training and Development

  • Oversee an in-house employee training system that addresses company training needs, new employee orientation, and career development.
  • In collaboration with the Manager of Equity and Access, develop and implement training related to equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • Assess training needs and measure the impact of training programs.

Labor Relations and Contract Negotiation

  • Collaborate with the Chief Resource Officer on union contract negotiations.
  • Act as the lead on all grievances and arbitrations.

Campus Operations and Safety Programs

  • Collaborate with the Director, Campus Operations to update processes, protocols, and procedure manuals.
  • Assist in the development, execution, and communication of campus-wide safety programs and initiatives.
  • Work closely with the Manager, Facilities to establish safety procedures and manuals.
  • Perform other special projects and assignments as assigned.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor's degree required. Professional HR Certification preferred: PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP.
  • Minimum 7-10 years' experience in Human Resources management.
  • Minimum 2-5 years' experience working in a union environment.
  • Minimum 5-7 years supervisory experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of federal and state labor laws.
  • Strong leadership, time management, and multi-tasking skills, coupled with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills and the ability to effectively apply these to a diverse set of issues.
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with staff, faculty, external customers, and guests in an academic and professional environment.
  • A commitment to excellence and to making a meaningful difference; results-driven, improvement-focused, and action-oriented with the ability to handle an array of small scale and large-scale responsibilities simultaneously and proactively strive for process improvements and success.
  • Highly developed customer service skills with the ability to establish and maintain rapport with internal and external contacts.
  • Excellent management, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Strong writing and grammatical skills.
  • Strong self-motivation and self-initiative.
  • Strong computer skills: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) using the Apple Macintosh platform.
  • Personal integrity and the ability to inspire confidence and trust.
  • Must demonstrate a friendly and cooperative attitude with staff, external customers, fellows and guests.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $110,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year

  • Human resources management: 7 years (Preferred)
