GENERAL STATEMENT (Summary of Duties and Responsibilities):The Director of Laboratory Services oversees the daily operations of a full-service laboratory specializing in infectious disease, HLA, and clinical testing for organ and tissue donors. Under the general direction of the Chief Clinical Officer, the incumbent is responsible for developing and maintaining laboratory administrative, financial, and technical objectives, supervising laboratory personnel, and ensuring the performance and reporting of test results. The incumbent may also perform laboratory testing as needed.EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS :The incumbent must hold a bachelor's degree or higher in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution. A master's degree or higher in management or a relevant scientific field is preferred.The incumbent must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in a CLIA and ASHI (or equivalent) accredited laboratory, along with a minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership/supervisory experience.The incumbent must meet all CMS/CLIA, state, and ASHI qualifications for a General Supervisor. Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (ABHI) or Specialist in Immunology (ASCP) preferred. Current certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) or equivalent is preferred, but not required.Excellent communication skills required. The ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel and to represent the organization publicly is essential. The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is required, along with the ability to cope with high levels of stress and handle a heavy workload.The incumbent must have a valid driver's license and the ability to drive a personal automobile to meet job duties and responsibilities. Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, is required.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :Develops and maintains administrative and financial objectives.Serves as the primary laboratory representative to the senior leadership team as well as outside organizations.Develops and oversees the implementation of the laboratory strategic plan.Prepares and manages the laboratory budget.Ensures equipment, instruments, and computer programs are adequate to meet the needs of the laboratory.Participates in regular meetings with the Chief Clinical Officer, Laboratory Managers, and laboratory staff, and other departments as required.Maintains laboratory certification and accreditation through all applicable accrediting organizations.Develops and maintains technical objectives.Reviews completed tests and reports to ensure accuracy.Ensures that an accurate procedure manual is maintained for all laboratory tests/functions.In collaboration with the Laboratory Managers, ensures that laboratory staff are adequately trained and testing is performed according to established procedures.In collaboration with the Laboratory Managers, coordinates competency assessments of laboratory staff.Oversees the laboratory quality assurance program.Ensures that appropriate proficiency testing materials are available for all tests performed.Manages laboratory personnel.In collaboration with the Laboratory Managers, interviews candidates and approves the hiring of new employees.Maintains job descriptions for all laboratory personnel.Conducts performance reviews of the Laboratory Managers and the Laboratory Quality and Information Specialist.Provides overall guidance to the Laboratory Managers regarding performance issues and coaching for laboratory staff, and makes recommendations regarding staff disciplinary actions, including termination.Provides technical assistance.In collaboration with the Laboratory Managers and Lead Medical Technologists, resolves day-to-day operational and technical problems in accordance with established procedures.Is available by phone to provide consultation as needed.Other duties as assigned.Additional Information: Southwest Transplant Alliance is actively taking precautions to protect our community, staff, and partners during this time of medical emergency due to COVID-19.
