Job Description:

Syracuse University invites applications for the Director of the Lender Center for Social Justice. The Lender Center for Social Justice is a globally engaged, multidisciplinary center posed to be a national hub for social justice leadership in research, scholarship, and action. We seek a nationally recognized scholar in social justice research, teaching, and action to lead the center's charge to foster proactive, innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to issues related to justice, equity, and inclusion. The next director will provide visionary leadership for individuals and institutions from across campus, the community and nation to propose and develop innovative ways of engaging contemporary social issues and to promote the pursuit of social justice, human rights, and anti-discrimination.

Established in 2017 with a generous gift from Helaine and Marvin Lender and administered by the Office of the Associate Provost for Strategic Initiatives in Academic Affairs, the Lender Center for Social Justice supports initiatives that promote innovative and multidisciplinary research of contemporary social problems while providing proactive and concrete approaches and solutions. These initiatives include an innovative faculty and student fellowship program, an annual symposium, and a conversation series encouraging dialogue among researchers, practitioners, activists, and thought leaders. Most recently, the Lender Center received a three-year, $2.7 million dollar grant from the MetLife Foundation to support research initiatives aimed at addressing the racial wealth gap. The grant supports postdoctoral fellowships, intramural grants, and research symposia. The director will provide strategic and visionary leadership for this grant initiative working with the Office of Research and the Advancement Team.

In addition, this recruitment is part of an ambitious Invest Syracuse Cluster Hire Initiative in the broad area of social differences and social justice. As an integral part of this investment, Syracuse University will recruit multiple candidates for faculty positions for the research cluster. Faculty hired into these positions will build on our existing strengths in the focus area and will participate in an effort that spans multiple departments in the School of Education, the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, the College of Arts and Sciences, and others. Further information on the campus-wide hiring initiative can be found at
