ABOUT THE ROLE The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) is expanding its major gifts program and seeks a highly motivated Director, Major Gifts to join its growing Development & Events (D&E) department. Reporting to the Managing Director, Development & Major Gifts, this position will help grow a major gifts program and work with Development & Events leadership to develop the case for support to impact investors and philanthropists as BCRF gears up to launch a comprehensive campaign. BCRF prides itself on having a high-touch, donor-centric culture, and this new position will be expected to communicate the singular, science-focused mission to a sophisticated group of high-net-worth prospects and donors in established and emerging markets of opportunity. The Director, Major Gifts supervises a team of Philanthropy Officers. This position is based in New York, New York. BCRF currently requires staff to work onsite a minimum of three days per week. Primary Responsibilities
- Grow, operationalize, and manage a full-scale major gifts program, including management of individualized strategies for the identification, qualification, engagement, solicitation, and stewardship of prospects with ratings of at least $100,000+ for major giving.
- Develop and maintain a personal portfolio of 100+ major donors and prospects (with capacity to make gifts of $100,000+) with the goal of growing this pool to achieve increased engagement and revenue.
- Together with the Managing Director, Development & Major Gifts, manage, develop, mentor and grow a team of major gift professionals utilizing an empathetic and supportive leadership style to maintain a high level of performance.
- Guide the major gifts team and bring strategic focus to their work; foster a work ethic rooted in innovation and collaboration with a commitment to excellence.
- Support a strong sense of teamwork within the D&E department, including ensuring smooth collaboration with the Events team. Provide tactical support and ensure that blended gifts are executed as donors engage across a variety of fundraising strategies.
- Focus on existing and emerging markets with increasing significance to BCRF, developing a robust pipeline of donors.
- Collaborate across the D&E team to ensure consistent donor strategy and the use of a moves management system throughout the solicitation process, including comprehensive documentation utilizing Raiser's Edge (NXT); ensure all major gift activity is appropriately tracked in NXT.
- Track fiscal year fundraising metrics and KPIs, including personal visits and other contacts, cultivation and stewardship activities, proposals, and solicitations, as well as prospect identification and qualification.
- Create and submit monthly reports to senior leadership that accurately reflect Major Gifts' caseload activity and performance in alignment with KPIs as required.
- Coordinate with the Science/Research, and Marketing & Communications teams as needed to secure appropriate project information, including budgets, timelines, and recognition benefits; and manage all solicitation materials for the major gifts team, including the creation of case statements.
- Assume other duties as assigned, including on-site support at events.
ABOUT YOU You are a results-oriented fundraiser, grounded in best major gifts practices, with a successful track record of securing six and seven figure gifts. You have the ability to develop and implement strategies and processes to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a pool of high-capacity prospects and donors. You have a passion for the mission and work of BCRF. In addition, you have the following qualifications and experience:
- Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in managing major gift fundraising for large nonprofit organizations with demonstrated results in major, leadership, and principal gifts; experience in a complex medical/academic center and proven success in health philanthropy is preferred.
- Minimum of four years of experience managing staff in a development/philanthropy role.
- Experience in growing a major gift program.
- Superior written communication skills to express the mission and fundraising goals of BCRF with clarity, passion, and persuasion; ability to present in writing and orally the credible and compelling BCRF story to external and internal constituencies.
- Proven interpersonal skills to work effectively with senior leadership, donors, prospects, and volunteers.
- Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and develop strong, collaborative working relationships with colleagues.
- Demonstrate high degree of initiative and resourcefulness, with the ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced work environment.
- Flexible and adaptable to take on new responsibilities within a growing program.
- Positive and solution-oriented attitude.
- Highly skilled with Raiser's Edge, Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to lift, move or carry up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis; ability to push or pull a cart weighing up to 25 pounds
There will be the occasional need to work extra hours evenings and weekends to fulfill the requirements of the role. Location: This position is based in New York City. While performing the duties of this role, you would be expected to be in the office at least three days per week. Travel: This role requires travel outside the New York Metro area averaging 2-3 times a quarter throughout the year. Compensation and Benefits: This is a full-time exempt role.
