Position Summary

The MPH, launched in 2006 and with students starting in 2008 as the first degree program of the college's growing Program in Public Health. It draws students from throughout the country and internationally. We engage students in on-line coursework and practical training to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities required to succeed as public health professionals. This training is to help realize our vision to eliminate health disparities and achieve health equity for diverse populations in local and global communities while attaining the highest level of health for all individuals and groups – especially our most vulnerable and at-risk.

The Program currently offers three concentrations – Generalist, Data Management, and Rural Public Health. Program revenue is generated through tuition proceeds as part of the University's RBI system. The faculty is comprised of full and part-time individuals who currently number 22. Full-time staff number 7 individuals. The Program delivers instruction fully online and asynchronously. Student advising and mentoring are also fully online.

The Director of the MPH program will advance, strengthen, and promote all activities associated with the MPH program and with the Department's undergraduate public health offerings. The Director will have direct responsibility for MPH staff annual reviews, oversight of the development of data reporting to ASPPH and CEPH (post-accreditation), instruction in core and capstone courses as appropriate, oversight of competency attainment for program students, and work with staff on evolving the respective dashboards. The Director will participate as an ex-officio member of the program standing committees – Admissions, Accreditation, Curriculum, Course Directors, Workforce, and Academic Standards. The Director will develop and administer the annual curricular reviews held with all instructional faculty.

The Director is also responsible for overseeing offerings of undergraduate public health courses that have recently been/are being developed. Additional strategic priorities for the position include increasing MPH student enrollment and working to elevate the Department's standing and reputation through active ASPPH participation and continued CEPH accreditation.

The Director, like all faculty, will have the expectation to teach, develop curriculum and courses, and produce scholarship. The position is in the university's fixed term appointment system and may receive rolling two-year appointments. This is an off-campus position located in the College of Human Medicine's Flint, MI headquarters. Occasional travel to the East Lansing campus will be required.

Appointment and Rank:

Academic department and rank will be determined based upon qualifications and experience, but it is expected initial appointment will be at the associate professor level. The position is in the University's fixed term appointment system and may receive rolling two-year appointments. This is an off-campus position located in the College of Human Medicine's Flint, MI headquarters.

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Have direct responsibility for MPH faculty annual curricular reviews and annual performance reviews.
  • Have direct responsibility for MPH staff annual reviews.
  • Provide oversight of the development of data reporting to ASPPH and CEPH (post-accreditation).
  • Provide instruction in selected courses annually.
  • Provide oversight of competency attainment for program students, and work with staff on evolving the respective dashboards.
  • Participate as an ex-officio member of the program's standing committees – Admissions, Accreditation, Curriculum, Course Directors, Workforce, and Academic Standards.
  • Teach, develop curriculum and courses, and produce scholarship.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of the newly developed undergraduate public health courses.
  • Represent the MPH Program in meetings with CHM Academic Affairs Deans & Directors meetings, and in other university meetings and planning groups as appropriate (e.g., Henry Ford Health Education Committee).
  • Represent the program at local, regional, and national public health agencies and organizations, as needed to elevate its stature and reputation, especially at ASPPH.
Travel:
  • Travel occasionally to the East Lansing campus, as required.
  • Travel occasionally to professional conferences/meetings, as required.

Required Degree

Doctorate - Public Health or related discipline

Minimum Requirements
  • The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree, preferably in public health or a related discipline;
  • experience working in public health or related fields;
  • demonstrated administrative and research skills;
  • at least one previous leadership role with faculty or instructors;
  • strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Other essential attributes include teaching experience, both in-class and especially in an asynchronous online format; peer-reviewed publication record; experience working with diverse groups of faculty, instructors, staff, and students; commitment to social justice, inclusion, and diversity.
Desired Qualifications
  • Post-graduate professional working experience in a public health setting(s) or related fields.
  • Administrative and research skills; at least one previous leadership role with faculty or instructors.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Teaching experience (in-class and asynchronous online format).
  • Experience in course development and instruction, and student mentoring.
  • Peer-reviewed publication record.
  • Experience working with diverse groups of faculty, instructors, staff, and students; commitment to social justice, inclusion, and diversity.
  • Experience with academic program accreditation, preferably through the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).
  • Experience with activities that increase the reputation and standing of educational programs.
  • Experience with strategic planning and growth of academic departments and/or programs.
