Main Purpose of Job

The Bureau of Mines Director position is identified in theEnvironment Article, Section 15-202 of the Annotated Code of Maryland, and isappointed by the Secretary of the Department.The Director of Mines main responsibility is to direct, plan,coordinate, and administer all of the activities of the Bureau. The management responsibilities of thisposition are unique to the Department. The ideal candidate for this position musthave executive ability and experience in the mining industry, knowledge in theprinciples and practices of mining, planning, design, conservation, research,and experience in reclamation, abandoned mine restoration, drainage abatement,and administration. The Bureau's diversetechnical staff consist of engineers, geologists, earth scientists, foresters,and laboratory scientists are involved in complex and often controversialregulatory and planning activities. Thisposition is a field position, and the incumbent in this position will be performingduties in Allegany and Garrett County.The working conditions for this position involve exposureto uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings performing duties during inclementweather, greasy and dirty construction site conditions, hazardous minecondition, and field reconnaissance over rough terrain. During site visits thereare safety measures to adhere to in accordance with The Mine Safety and HealthAdministration requirements to wear protective equipment when on a mine site.When inspecting deep mines (underground) a miner's lamp, self-rescuer and safetytoe boot must be worn.Theincumbent in this position will be required to drive a State vehicle. Ifyou maintain an out-of-state driving license, you must provide a certified copyof your driving record from the appropriate Motor Vehicle Administration at thetime of appointment. Individuals mustmaintain a driver's licensewith no more than 5 points on their driving record in order to drive aStatevehicle.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Possession of a Bachelor'sdegree from an accredited college or university that includes 30 credits in thebiological, environmental, physical sciences, other appropriate technicaldiscipline, or possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college oruniversity in Environmental Law or Environmental Public Policy or otherappropriate related degree.EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of experience supervising professionalstaff in an environmental field or experience as an environmental projectmanager including assigning tasks, setting priorities, and reviewing workproducts.NOTES:(1) Professional or scientific experience related to naturalresources, environment or public health may be substituted on a year-for-yearbasis for education.(2) One additional year of experience in professional scientific,natural resources, or environmental or public health may be substituted for the30 specialized academic credits.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate should be familiar with coal mining andreclamation.
