Overview:
Reports to Senior Vice President, Patient Care Services/CNO. Responsible for identifying, implementing, monitoring and evaluating nursing standards of practice and operational quality improvement activities; including all Human Resource and Educational activities.
Responsibilities:
- Participates with the Senior Vice President for Patient Care Services and other members of the nursing staff in establishing philosophy and goals of the Nursing Department.
- Monitors planning of staffing to ensure safe patient care.
- Ensures that all areas have appropriate staffing plans, and recruitment, hiring & retention practices to retain qualified staff for positions. Monitors staffing effectiveness regularly.
- Provides direct supervision of Assistant Directors of Nursing, Nurse Managers and Administrative Nursing Coordinators.
- Demonstrates working knowledge of legal, regulatory and union requirements. In addition provide clinical leadership to adhere to enforcement of state nursing practices.
- Provides effective, timely response and communication with superiors, peers, staff, other departments/disciplines, and Medical staff. Meets regularly with Chairperson of Service for joint planning.
- Plans data-driven Performance Improvement activities which fit into the organization-wide plan and makes quantifiable improvements in the services provided.
- Participates with Senior Vice President for Patient Care Services in establishing standards/guidelines/policies which ensure efficient, safe and effective patient care.
- Participates with Senior Vice President for Patient Care Services in planning the portion of nursing Departments budget, table of organization for the division and control of the divisional budget.
- Provides opportunities for professional growth and development of staff based on clinical and professional standards of clinical care and of professional practice.
- Monitors the counseling and discipline of nursing personnel.
- Provides consultation in the area of clinical expertise.
- Represents the Department of Nursing on selected committees through participation or representation.
- Participates in the system of continuing education to increase administrative and clinical knowledge and skills.
- Innovative and implements best practices in care.
- Assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Vice President for Patient Care Services.

- Establishes and monitors customer service improvement goals, which focus on priority aspects of patient satisfaction.
- Directs the nursing component of PI initiatives including the collection of data, analysis of data and formulation of recommendations to improve nursing practice or patient outcomes.
- CAUTIs, CLABSI, Pressure Injury, Falls, Restraints, and Elopements - Supports and empowers staff to improve the quality of care and/or service.
- Collaborates with PI Department in performance improvement.
- Complies with department performance improvement processes, including timely submission of data.
- All other duties as requested.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Graduate of accredited Nursing school BSN.
- Masters Degree in nursing or related field or minimum of ten (10) years of relevant Administrative/ Supervisory experience.
- Doctorate preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum ten (10) years of nursing experience.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Critical thinking, math, and computer skills Excel & Word.
- Effective application of TQM teams, quality measures, clinical guidelines and process management initiatives.
- Monitors and facilitates the meeting of requirements of NYSDOH, JCAHO and other regulators.
- Capable in producing trend and evaluation data and documentation.
- Knowledge of quality improvement philosophy models, processes and tools and their use in health care integrated settings.
- Maintains currency with state of the art and regulatory trends.
- Knowledge of methods for CQI, and Root Cause Analysis.
- Works effectively in integrated structure by establishing effective working relationships with all departments and levels of staff.
- Demonstrates competence in leadership and administrative skills.
- Works as a team player.
- Demonstrates respect and professionalism in all interactions.
- Excellent oral and communication skills.

- Current New York State RN License

- Trauma Care After Resuscitation (TCAR)
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
- Certified in Emergency Nursing (CEN)
- Certified in Pediatric Emergency Nursing (CPEN)
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certification (NRP)
- Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE)
- Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)
- Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC)
Physical Requirements:
- Physically demanding, high-stress environment.
- Occasional exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions.
- Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients.
