Overview Off shift weekend/holiday Associate Director of Nursing (ADN) assumes shift responsibility for the overall assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care on the clinical units and medical center. Supports the hospital and nursing service mission, vision, values and the overall strategic planning, clinical management, patient care, financial management to achieve quality outcomes. Promotes the health system service standards and creates a patient focused caring environment while addressing and meeting the individual needs of the patient. Fosters an environment of collaboration and respect with physician colleagues, nurses and other healthcare team members. Responsibilities Standard Compliance Maintains current knowledge and ensures compliance with all regulatory and professional standards of care. Collaborates with nursing leadership with developing quality/performance improvement programs, instructing staff and implementing new and improved standards. Follows up on shift corrective action plans to ensure that quality of care is embedded into clinical practice on an ongoing basis. Operational Performance Supports and monitors the shift personnel, monitors supply and equipment budgets in collaboration with the nursing leadership. Reviews unit staffing schedules and ensures adequate daily coverage in accordance with established staffing needs. Develops measures and monitors unit operational performance metrics, agency and overtime costs. Clinical Practice/Patient Care Collaborates with the CNO/Nursing Leadership to support nursing care standards and evaluates staff compliance. Reviews shift provision of support services essential to patient care. Maintains a safe and caring environment for patients that is conducive to positive health teaching and maintenance; patient and family expectations of care to be delivered in a culturally sensitive manner and role models sensitivity to staff. Management Participates in the overall planning process for the service. Collaborates with nursing leadership and follows up corrective measure findings from patient satisfaction survey and with input from the staff, to establish unit based customer service agenda. Exercises critical thinking to ensure an effective plan for delivery of nursing care within the assigned area of responsibility. Efficiently and effectively responds to patient and family concerns or complaints with sensitivity and compassion in a timely fashion Human Resource Development/Management Supports, educates and evaluates clinical practice. Works with SVP/CNO and Human Resources to counsel, discipline staff as needed. Educates staff in new and existing department procedures and systems Makes recommendations and provides opportunities for growth and development of personnel and coordinates with nursing education for appropriate education and training as required. Creates and maintains a supportive working environment for all staff, students, patients, and families/visitors. Demonstrates self-development and keeps currents on a variety of clinical management and health care topics. Responds in a timely fashion to staff concerns and functions proactively to ensure safe care. Establishes unit metrics and goals to measure effectiveness of retention strategies. Creates and maintains an atmosphere of respect and courtesy toward patients, staff and colleagues. Employs learning organization principles and techniques in all aspects of unit leadership. Promotes a level of professionalism on the unit. Interactive Relationships Promotes empowerment of the staff by utilizing collaborative approaches and encouraging new ideas. Promotes collegial relationships based on mutual respects and support. Qualifications Education: Master's Degree in Nursing, required. Experience: Minimum three (3) years nursing experience including previous nursing leadership experience. Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrated leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, required. Ability to effectively communicate in English both verbally and in writing. Excellent creative skills, ideas to improve existing programs. Ability to critically think from an organizational perspective. Licenses, Certifications: Licensed and currently registered as a Professional Nurse (RN) in New York State required. Physical Requirements: Involves standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing and bending. May include some repetitive motions.
