SummaryThe Director of Athletics will serve as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Army West Point Athletic Association Inc. ( AWPAA ), a New York nonprofit corporation authorized via a Cooperative Agreement to execute the intercollegiate athletics programs of the United States Military Academy at West Point and supports the Academy's mission to build leaders of character for the Army and our nation. AWPAA executes 28 athletics teams supporting 24 head coaches and over 1,000 cadet-athletes. The Director of Athletics will be responsible for creating and leading an environment for competitive and respected Division I, or equivalent, athletics programs. The Director of Athletics will be responsible for significant fundraising responsibilities and overseeing substantial facilities and stadium construction initiatives.Success FactorsSuccess in this position will be evaluated by the AWPAA Board of Directors on the employee's performance in a variety of areas, including but not limited to: Commitment to AWPAA Mission, Vision and Values; and supporting the AWPAA Strategic Plan and Priority Results.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead a department with over 200 employees including 24 head coaches.
- Inspire and motivate athletics teams, cadets, faculty, staff, colleagues, alumni and supporters.
- Support, recruit, lead, mentor and retain talented coaches and administrators.
- Interact frequently with and report to the AWPAA Board of Directors and USMA Board of Directors.
- Work collaboratively and diligently with the West Point Association of Graduates to actively participate in fundraising activities.
- Oversee revenue generation activities for athletics to maximize growth in engagement and revenue opportunities.
- Monitor and supervise athletics budgets and financial position.
- Position AWPAA for long-term growth, sustainability and athletic success.
- Cultivate a culture of compliance and inclusion.
- Actively represent AWPAA in NCAA and conference governance structure to ensure its place in shifting landscape of Division I collegiate athletics.
- Oversee AWPAA's position with respect to the Army-Navy Game honoring the traditions of the game while maximizing engagement and revenue opportunities, including leading an RFP cycle with professional stadium bids.
Supervisory ResponsibilitiesThe Director of Athletics will have direct oversight of key department leadership roles and will ultimately be responsible as the executive of the organization for all staff members.Work Conditions & Physical RequirementsPerform duties in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment.
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position for 50% of the time.
- Occasionally moves boxes weighing up to up to 30 lbs.
- The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
- Constantly operates a computer, printer, and phone.
- The person in this position frequently communicates with team members, United States Military Academy ( USMA ) staff and vendors.
- Occasionally works in outdoor weather conditions.
- Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Travel Must be available for extensive travel which may often include night, weekend and overnight travel as required to represent AWPAA nation-wide.Required Qualifications

- Experience in facilities oversight and planning, budget management and strategic planning.
- Fundraising experience for athletic programs and facilities.
- Bachelor's degree.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree.
- 10 years of experience in increasingly responsible leadership for intercollegiate athletics programs at higher education institutions with profiles similar to USMA.
Additional Eligibility Requirements
- Must be eligible to work in the United States of America, without sponsorship.
- Must be eligible to work on a military installation, including a willingness to submit to a background screen.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
Pay Range$400,000 - $600,000This job posting contains a pay range, which represents the range of salaries that AWPAA believes, in good faith, at the time of this posting that it might be willing to pay for the posted position.
