SUMMARY: The Director of Communications and Marketing is responsible for driving the strategies that champion and develop the AMS story; strategically communicating, marketing, and branding the AMS on relevant platforms to all its audiences. This senior leadership position is responsible for defining and identifying the society's multiple audiences, the organization's value proposition for each audience, and the best strategies to encourage those audiences to develop a deeper relationship with the AMS. Leveraging data to inform decision-making and approaches, this role will oversee all marketing and communications, including but not limited to digital marketing, media relations, content creation, and event promotion.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy aligned with the organization's mission, goals, and objectives.
- Collaborate with the senior leadership team to identify, define, and engage all audiences through effective communication strategies and tactics.
- Lead the communications and marketing team, providing vision, direction, and professional development opportunities.
Brand Management:
- Ensure consistent messaging and branding across all communications, reinforcing the organization's identity and mission in the mathematical community and among all AMS audiences.
- Develop and maintain brand guidelines and oversee their application in all communications.
Strategic Communications and Media Relations:
- Oversee the development and implementation of robust communication strategies to enhance the organization's public image and reputation.
- Cultivate relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers in the field of mathematics and education to enhance the organization's visibility and reputation.
- Serve as a spokesperson for the organization when necessary.
- Collaborate with the membership team to develop and manage communication strategies to keep members informed and engaged, including newsletters, announcements, and updates on organizational activities.
- Collaborate with the meetings and conferences team to develop promotional materials and campaigns for events, maximizing attendance and engagement.
- Monitor and analyze marketing metrics to assess the effectiveness of campaigns and initiatives, making data-driven decisions to improve outreach and engagement.
Content and Digital Marketing
- Oversee the creation and distribution of compelling content for various platforms, including newsletters, social media, websites, and publications, highlighting the organization's initiatives, research, and member achievements..
- Drive digital marketing efforts, including SEO, SEM, email marketing, and social media campaigns to increase online visibility and engagement.
- Analyze and report on the effectiveness of digital marketing campaigns and adjust strategies accordingly.
Budget and Resource Management:
- Develop and manage the communications and marketing budget, ensuring efficient and effective use of resources.
- Identify and leverage opportunities for partnerships, sponsorships, and collaborations to support communications and marketing efforts.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:Internal: Report to Chief External Relations Officer; work with staff in other departments to plan and implement membership recruitment and retention strategies; cooperate with staff in other departments on relevant projectsExternal: Work with relevant AMS committees and officers on membership issues; communicate with AMS members and representatives of other organizationsSUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:This role leads the Office of Communications and Marketing.QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, candidates must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in marketing communications, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Proven ability to lead and motivate a team, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
- Proven track record of developing and executing successful marketing and communication strategies.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in using data and metrics to drive decision-making.
- Proficiency in content management systems, social media platforms, and digital marketing tools.
- Experience in the nonprofit sector and/or membership organizations is highly desirable.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.

- Ability to conceptualize surveys and make informed decisions based on the results.
- Proficiency in marketing and membership management software and CRM systems.
