They focus on long-range strategic priorities, advance the Conservancy's goals, and communicate a broad vision to others. They establish and monitor activity level benchmarks and measures of success. They manage the development and implementation of a strategic, integrated, and collaborative approach to maximize success, including working with the marketing staff to target donor communications as needed. They will continue the early momentum of the chapter's Campaign leading the philanthropy team, volunteers and leadership to a successful outcome in 2030. They will lead an experienced philanthropy team and level up its success.The Director works closely with and manages relations with senior management, internal teams, donors, and volunteers to achieve program goals. They will be responsible for volunteer engagement and managing selected trustee relationships. The Director will staff the Trustee Development Committee and participate in the Nominating and Governance Committee offering analysis and recommendations to the committees.The New Jersey Director of Development will be personally responsible for a select group of prospects and donors, the size of the portfolio will be determined in part with consideration for the scope of supervisory responsibility.We're Looking for You:The New Jersey Director of Development is responsible for directing all aspects of the New Jersey fund-raising effort, which will secure significant financial resources to support conservation goals. The chapter development program focuses on major individual gifts, planned gifts, foundation support and some corporate giving. The department staff may also aid conservation team in writing public grants as needed. The Director is a member of the chapter's five-person Leadership Team and as such helps guide the chapter's strategic direction and helps address other overarching issues.Accountable for fundraising goals of $5 million to $10 million a year through New Jersey's philanthropy program.Broad management responsibility for a 9-person department, including recruitment, retaining, professional development, establishing clear directions, and setting stretch  objectives.Lead New Jersey's One Future Campaign through collaboration with senior-level staff, volunteers, and campaign counsel. (Working goal is $100M by 2030.)Manage high-capacity donors on the Board of Trustees.Oversee the creation and implementation of the annual fundraising event, including managing the event committee volunteers.Partner with the Assoc. Dir. of Philanthropy Operations on budget management ensuring program accountability.Develop and administer budget and fundraising objectives, evaluate results and develop corrective strategies as needed.Direct or participate in negotiations for complex gift agreements.As appropriate, plan and lead new funding programs/initiatives that will ensure department and organization-wide goals are achieved.As part of the Leadership Team, participate in strategic decisions that may have program-wide impact and may bind the organization financially or legally.Responsible for creating and meeting strategic goals and objectives.Hybrid work environment, request in-office presence two days per week.Travel 15% of the time, mainly in-state. Occasional domestic and international travel.Ensure that programmatic commitments, TNC policies and procedures, financial standards, and legal requirements are met and managed for ethical compliance.Maintain confidentiality of frequently sensitive and emotionally charged information.Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements minor physical exertion and/or strain.What You'll Bring:Bachelor's degree and 8 years related experience, including experience working at a senior level.Experience asking for and closing major gifts.Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors, foundations and corporations.Experience in planning and delivering budgetary responsibilities.Experience managing and supervising a multidisciplinary team.Experience working in a large, complex, not-for-profit environment.Experience, coursework, or other training in principles, practices, and procedures of relevant field.DESIRED QUALIFICATIONSAdvanced understanding of best practices in non-profit management.Effectively communicate via presentations, conversations, and documents.Experience managing a geographically dispersed team - hybrid working arrangement.Experience with fundraising campaigns.Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in major gifts giving and solicitation.Knowledge of gift planning concepts.Proficiency in synthesizing materials from multiple sources into a coherent and accurate summary.Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.This description is not designed to be a complete list of all duties and responsibilities required for this job.What We Bring:Since 1951, The Nature Conservancy has been doing work you can believe in protecting the lands and waters that all life depends on.
