Job Description:

Massachusetts College of Art and Design is seeking a talented individual to join our team as the Director of Facilities for Maintenance and Trades. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Facilities Management and Capital Planning and working collaboratively with the campus community, this position provides operational leadership to a comprehensive facilities management organization responsible for maintenance, construction, capital planning, sustainability, emergency management, and environmental health and safety for the College's campus in Boston, Massachusetts.

Reports to: Assistant Vice President Facilities and Capital Planning

Provides direct supervision to the Assistant Director of Maintenance and the Assistant Director of Trades and indirect oversight to a staff of fifty (50) full-time employees engaged in maintenance and trades activities.

Salary: $120,000-$130,000 Commensurate with experience Position is governed by the APA collective bargaining agreement

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic:

  • Understand the College's mission, vision, and values and execute operationally in support of it.
  • Collaborate with and advise the AVP for Facilities and Capital Planning to determine long-term goals, resource planning, operational expectations, and best practices.

Operational:

  • Oversee and manage all housekeeping, internal construction, including trades work and HVAC operations of the College Campus.
  • Manage day-to-day facilities operations, maintenance, and environmental health and safety.
  • Generate, negotiate, execute and manage contracts with external vendors, following both state and college procurement policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate fiscal responsibility for all expenses related to maintenance, operations, and utilities.
  • Enforce safety work rules and procedures in accordance with Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards and other applicable regulations.
  • May serve on the College's Rapid Response Team at the discretion of the AVP.

Administrative:

  • Lead, develop, and supervise direct reports, assessing and developing a staffing plan for recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation of department personnel.
  • Assist the AVP Facilities with the maintenance, trades, and utilities portion of the operating and personnel budget.
  • Develop policies, plans, and procedures for effective operations of the Department.
  • Develop equipment inventory list and ensure maintenance of all departmental assets.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in business management, engineering, facilities management, or related field, or a combination of education and demonstrated experience sufficient to meet the needs of the position.
  • Three (3+) years in a senior role in facilities/operations management, preferably in higher education.
  • Demonstrated supervisory success with a unionized workforce.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness working with a diverse faculty, staff, students, and the general public.
  • Excellent project management skills, managing multiple priorities and projects.
  • High caliber of written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in software applications (e.g., Microsoft Office, CAD, CAM).
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Additional consideration for prior experience with public capital projects and knowledge of facilities needs in a working art museum.

Physical Requirements: Ability to be on call, significant night and weekend work, mobility between campus buildings, and essential personnel presence on the College's Rapid Response Team.
