Our mission is to use the history and lessons of the Holocaust to build a just and caring community free of antisemitism and all forms of prejudice and bigotry. As a nationally and internationally recognized organization, we build inclusive communities by teaching the principles of good citizenship to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds each year. We are a nonprofit organization with over 40 years of impact in our community. In addition to growing our current programs, we are in the planning stages of constructing a new Holocaust Museum for Hope & Humanity in downtown Orlando.

Position Summary

If you're a strategic thinker with a knack for managing both capital and operating financials, a passion for building robust and efficient systems, and a desire to lead in a collaborative, growth-oriented environment, we want you to join our team. The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center (HMREC) is seeking a Director of Finance with a proven track record in enhancing finance operations and performance, managing the financial dynamics of capital campaigns and projects, supporting organizational growth, improving and documenting process flows, and implementing efficiencies and effectiveness. The ideal candidate will embrace modern financial technology, bring extensive understanding of nonprofit financial management, and be a customer-service oriented partner to staff and the Board of Directors.

You will serve as a trusted advisor to the executive team and Board of Directors, driving data-informed decisions and delivering on strategic priorities. You will work closely with all staff and collaborate with our part-time CFO to support long-term financial planning, development of pro formas and scenarios, and recommendations for necessary financial policies. The Director of Finance also serves in a critical role to support the Finance Committee of the Board to ensure strong fiduciary governance.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Strategy and Planning:

  • Develops and executes comprehensive financial strategies to support organizational growth and sustainability.
  • Works with the part-time CFO to develop long-term financial planning, forecasting, and multi-year financial modeling for both operational and capital projects.
  • Collaborates with executive leadership and Board of Directors to align financial goals with overall business strategy.
  • Supports staff in developing the annual budget, ensuring resource generation and allocation is aligned with annual and long-term priorities.
  • Works with part-time CFO, Finance Committee and Board of Directors to explore endowment draw scenarios and planning to support annual operating budget, as needed.

Financial Management, Collaboration and Capacity Building:

  • Responsible for the design and maintenance of all financial and accounting systems and for implementation and oversight of finance and risk management functions and policies. This includes responsibility for all accounting processes, payroll function (provided through TriNet PEO), treasury function, internal controls, budget monitoring, annual audits and 990s, tax compliance, and the administration of all insurance.
  • Manages all bookkeeping, A/R, A/P, deposits, monthly account reconciliations and journal entries, and conducts the monthly close.
  • Oversees cash flow planning and ensures availability of funds as needed.
  • Ensures timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial analysis and reporting for important decision-making, federal and state funding, foundations, private grants, and the Board of Directors; oversees the preparation and communication of monthly and annual financial statements; reports on financial ratios and KPIs and offers summary highlights and insights.
  • Ensures maintenance of appropriate internal controls, security, record retention, and financial procedures. Ensures all required activities are properly documented with appropriate support maintained, including unusual or infrequent transactions. Ensures legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions. Provides recommendations for, and ensures compliance with, all financial governance policies.
  • Interfaces with the Center's PEO (TriNet) to manage payroll, taxes, time tracking and time off, and related functions. Oversees 401K administration and annual audit; workers compensation insurance and audits.
  • Works closely with Director of People and Culture for new employee and contractor onboarding, compensation benchmarking, benefits selection and administration, and related functions.
  • Prepares and/or reviews grant budgets in collaboration with fundraising team.
  • Works with fundraising team to ensure effective and efficient processes are developed, documented, trained and implemented for comprehensive process flows, including tracking all sources of income and ensuring appropriate acknowledgements, tax letters, CRM data entry, and related systems.
  • Ensures comprehensive accounting and finance procedures and policies handbook is developed and updated; ensures comprehensive documentation, cross-training and emergency succession plans to protect business continuity.
  • Monitors investment portfolio performance and schedules quarterly portfolio review meetings with investment team, CFO, CEO, and Finance Committee.
  • Works closely with auditors; ensures all financial transactions and systems are subject to the proper audit standards and reporting requirements to ensure compliance with public grants, including Single Audit requirements as needed. Ensures accuracy and timeliness in audit and 990 filings.
  • Provides regular review and oversight for all insurance policies, annual Florida Division of Corporation filing, Florida Sales Tax Exemption certificate, and related risk and compliance activities.
  • Remains up to date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.
  • Assists in vendor selection; prepares requests for proposals for review of cost and performance of outside contractors for services or goods as needed.
  • Works closely with banks, auditors, legal counsel, contractors, and other professional advisors. Ensures all authority levels and authorized signers are current.
  • Fosters a collaborative environment across all departments in the organization; provides financial education to all team members. Communicates complex financial concepts in a way that inspires confidence and drives informed decision-making. Enthusiastic about a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Capital Campaign Management:

  • Tracks campaign donations and pledges including audit-ready documentation, cash flow implications, and coordinating with CEO and fundraising team on pledge invoicing, collections and acknowledgements.
  • Ensures compliance for capital allocations from the State, Orange County, and other government sources.
  • Tracks schedules, contingencies and requirements for all pledges.
  • Supports the development and management of capital budgets and funding strategies.
  • Supports part-time CFO and Finance Committee with financing pro formas and solutions.

The Director of Finance position is full time and expected to be on location in the offices. Mondays are currently remote for all staff, pending needs for in-person meetings and tasks. Must have flexibility on some early mornings and evenings to attend monthly meetings of the Board of Directors, Finance Committee, and campaign meetings as necessary. Must have dependable transportation and be able travel off-site for meetings, bank deposits, and similar activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Extensive, proven experience leading the finance function for a nonprofit organization of similar size and complexity.
  • Must have experience with capital campaigns.
  • Ability to maintain a professional and welcoming demeanor while working with diverse colleagues, volunteers and vendors.
  • Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills, with a history of successfully influencing business outcomes through financial insight.
  • Expertise in financial modeling, forecasting, and budget management.
  • Expertise with financial systems, ERP platforms, and reporting tools.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • A proactive and results-oriented mindset, with the ability to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated interest and success in supporting increased financial education and capacity building, and developing and implementing new systems to support growth and professionalism.
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field (MBA or CPA preferred).
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in finance leadership roles.
  • Must pass background and credit check.
