POSITION DETAILS

The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) was established in August 2018 and is the newest School within the system. The mission of the School is to: 1) offer undergraduate and graduate programs of labor and urban studies to working adults and traditional-age students; 2) expand educational opportunities to working adults while meeting the workforce development needs of the City and State, and 3) serve the labor and broader community by conducting research, offering leadership development programs, hosting forums and national conferences, and publishing national labor journals to promote debate on issues critical to labor and working-class communities.

SLU seeks a Director of Institutional Development who will work with existing and new partners to support and advance the educational, research, and public service mission of the School. The Director will be responsible for increasing the institutional capacity of the School by strengthening existing relationships and building new ones. They will work with foundations and private donors to raise external funds. They will collaborate with the Dean and SLU's advisory bodies, including the SLU Foundation Board and the SLU Labor and Community Advisory Board to identify external funding sources to advance the School's strategic plan. The Director will report to the Dean of the School or his designee.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Designing, implementing, and managing a comprehensive plan and strategy for aligning external funding with the School's vision, mission, and goals.
  • Coordinating the School's activities related to philanthropy, including foundations and major donors.
  • Identifying philanthropic funding opportunities, focusing on foundations and individual contributors.
  • Developing and executing a professional donor stewardship program.
  • Creating and evaluating fundraising appeals and providing regular progress reports to key stakeholders.
  • Providing leadership and innovative thinking in developing new programs and community engagement activities that will appeal to foundations and private donors.
  • Developing a close working relationship with CUNY's Advancement Office to leverage existing fundraising infrastructure, create efficiencies, and multiply impact.
  • Representing the School at events, meetings, and functions to enhance visibility and foster positive relationships.
  • Leading the organizational development of the SLU's nascent Foundation, including the development of its Foundation Board of Directors, ensuring that the Foundation develops best practices related to governance, financial reporting, program accountability, and compliance.

NOTE: This is a hybrid position with a 70% on-site requirement.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and eight years' related experience required.

  • Knowledge of and experience with foundations and other philanthropic organizations.
  • Experience with social justice organizations.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strategic thinker with a results-driven approach.
  • Demonstrated capacity to interact effectively with donors and institutional leaders, with a minimum of five years of experience in proven successful fundraising activities.

  • Academic experience.

  • Develops funding strategies; assesses outcome of strategic plan.
  • Oversees a portfolio of annual and major gift prospects to establish and sustain ongoing relations.
  • Maintains relationships with donors and sponsoring organizations to cultivate and maintain funding.
  • Ensures reporting requirements are completed in a timely and accurate manner.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary ranges from $119,995 - $141,858; commensurate with education and experience.
