Job Description:
Position Summary:The Director of Institutional Grants and Foundation Relations is a key member of the Institutional Advancement team at William James College. This role is responsible for securing revenue from a range of institutional funders, including government agencies,private foundations, and corporate foundations, to support the continuation and growth of graduate educational programs, partnerships, and services that impact our students and the community. The Director will be responsible for building upon the previous success of the department and will be a keycontributor in building the strategy in partnership with the Chief Development Officer.The Director must be an excellent strategist and communicator who has experience developing a staff, serving as a lead writer, and managing and building a pipeline. This role will require the ability to synthesize data and complex information to various stakeholders to secure support for William James College. The Directors primary responsibilities are outlined below. 1. Strategic planning
  • Design and manage a yearly grant funding strategy and plan that sustains and grows grant revenues based on WJC's strategic priorities.
  • Assist WJC senior leaders with the strategic prioritization of external funding opportunities (i.e., help determine which proposals to pursue by balancing factors such as institutional needs, faculty initiatives, grant size and impact, and available resources).
2. Grant prospecting, stewardship, reporting, and implementation
  • Working closely with the rest of the IA team, (i) identify and (ii) develop a robust pipeline of foundation, corporate and private funders through research and relationship building. Attend events and conferences, as appropriate.
  • Cultivate, solicit, steward, and otherwise manage relationships for, a significant portfolio of regional and national private foundations, as well as corporations and corporate foundations.
  • Facilitate external grant reporting and internal implementation, in collaboration with appropriate WJC stakeholders.
3. Relationship management
  • Foster collaboration within WJC and manage internal stakeholders in pursuing external funding opportunities; serve as primary point-of-contact for faculty and staff inquiries regarding grant applications and funding.
  • Design and implement regular workshops for faculty, staff, and other relevant stakeholders on identifying grant opportunities and writing proposals.
  • Collaborate with WJC marketing and communication teams to manage award announcements and press releases.
  • Manage outside vendors, consultants, internal staff, and other service providers related to grant development.
4. Grant writing
  • Serve as the senior writer for IA; act as the lead grant writer for key proposals, major gift proposals and stewardship, and secondary writer on other proposals.
  • Assist with presentations and communications, developed by the IA team and others, to secure external funding.
  • Oversee the writing of grant proposals by faculty members (that have received appropriate internal approvals and oversight) and serve as a resource to faculty members submitting grant applications
5. Systems and process management
  • Create policies for the (i) internal approval, (ii) external submission, and (iii) award stewardship and reporting (e.g., impact reports, scholarship tracking, and other measures of accountability that ensure grant obligations are being fulfilled) related to grants and other sponsored requests/pursuits.
  • Participate in an internal grant approval process to ensure proposals (i) comply with particular submission requirements, (ii) use consistent institutional data, and (iii) adhere to WJC's institutional, financial, HR, and other relevant policies.
  • Develop and maintain a library of grant opportunities relevant to the work of WJC faculty/staff.
  • Catalog and track in-progress and submitted grant proposals and applications.
  • Record final grant awards in appropriate internal systems (e.g., Raiser's Edge)
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Five years of prior grant writing experience
  • Experience in an academic setting with knowledge in federal grant guidelines and federal grant budgets is a plus
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projectss
  • Self-motivated and demonstrates initiative, patience, and resourcefulness in adapting to sudden changes
