History Associates Incorporated (HAI) is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity in the Litigation Research & Analysis service line for an experienced niche professional looking to adapt their historical and factual research knowledge and skills to provide consulting services to a diverse client base ranging from AM 100 law firms to Fortune 100/500 companies. In this role you will serve as a legal consultant and be responsible for overseeing all aspects of HAI Legal, a factual research and analysis consultancy which provides discreet and time-sensitive historical research, data, and analysis to law firms, corporations, and government agencies. The director will work in a fast-paced consulting environment (mirroring our Big Law clients) and will oversee new business development, ongoing client relationships, multiple budgets/schedules, and a staff of 25+ professionally trained historians, researchers, and subject matter experts. The role is for you to design but will rest on your ability to articulate and implement solutions relating to an array of client-directed research questions on a diversity of historical subjects and topics. You should have significant knowledge of federal, state, and local records systems and expertise conducting research throughout the United States in a wide variety of archives, libraries, government offices, and private record collections. You may have experience as a testifying expert and should excel at long-form analytical writing. You will report directly to HAI's service line vice president and collaborate professionally with other directors and senior managers to address and support clients' needs and pursue the vision and core values of HAI. You will play a vital role in strategic planning, defining new business opportunities and building long-term partnerships. Responsibilities:
  • Consulting Management: Creating, leading, and managing multiple teams of applied historians, researchers, and subject matter experts simultaneously, from project initiation to completion, ensuring adherence to time constraints, budgets, and quality standards.
  • Law Firm and C-Suite Engagement: Serve as the primary point-of-contact for new and ongoing legal and corporate clients, addressing inquiries, defining solutions, initiating projects, and monitoring success throughout the entire consulting lifecycle. Develop and maintain strong client relationships to drive client satisfaction and retention.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor a team of historians and researchers, providing guidance, support, and feedback to enhance performance and professional development. Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment that promotes creativity, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Historical and Factual Research and Analysis: Direct research and analysis on complex legal issues, regulatory frameworks, and policy developments, synthesizing findings into clear and actionable insights for clients. Review and quality-assure deliverables to ensure accuracy, relevance, and compliance with client requirements.
  • Business Development: Support business development efforts, including proposal writing, client presentations, and networking activities. Contribute to the expansion of the service line client base and service offerings through thought leadership, industry engagement, and relationship building. Work with marketing and sales team to formulate and execute industry-specific go-to market strategies.
Educational RequirementsPh.D. or MA in history with expertise in research methods. Superb candidates from other research-centric fields (economics, political science, anthropology) may also be considered. Job Requirements
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience serving as a legal consultant, policy researcher, senior project manager, or historian with a proven track record of successfully managing multi-year projects and delivering exceptional client results.
  • Exceptional understanding of research methodologies, databases, and resources, with proficiency in historical analysis, environmental law, environmental sciences, and business history.
  • Proven project management and supervisory experience
  • Professional involvement and networking experience
  • Strong writing, editing, presentation, and communication skills
  • Experience in delivering clear and persuasive oral and written communications, including briefings to executive-level managers within U.S. and multinational companies.
  • Expertise with Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests, and other sunshine laws.
  • Proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, Unanet
  • Ability to travel, both in the United States and internationally
