Director of Marketing Position

As two non-profit organizations founded in 1966, our staff works to fulfill a mission to enhance the quality of life and economic success of Greater Kansas City by taking the lead in maintaining and selectively acquiring a diversity of amateur and professional sporting events; to collaborate with area economic development and agencies to attract and retain amateur and professional sports organizations; and to promote the lifetime benefits of sports for the citizens of Greater Kansas City.

Whether we are hosting NCAA or Big 12 championships, producing local endurance events such as the Garmin Kansas City Marathon, executing WIN for KC events and opportunities, planning MLB World Series & NFL Super Bowl Victory Parades, or managing activation around major events such as the 2023 NFL Draft and select activities of KC2026 – we strive to make Kansas City better through sports.

Overview

As the head of the marketing and communications team, this role is responsible for guiding and executing marketing and communications strategies and tactics on behalf of the Greater Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation, WIN for KC, partners and the organization's portfolio of events (Garmin Kansas City Marathon, Hospital Hill Run, etc.). The Director of Marketing is a senior role, requiring the ability to work with external and internal stakeholders in a positive and productive way.

Specific Duties

This position encompasses a wide variety of deliverables, necessitating an individual with broad marketing experience, proven leadership skills and a proactive, strategic mentality. While the Director of Marketing manages a team comprised of a Creative Director, (possible) Communications Manager, and Digital Content Specialist, he/she will also be directly responsible for tasks such as allocating the annual advertising budget, managing external agencies as needed, concepting and delivering multi-channel marketing campaigns and ensuring all materials are consistent with brand standards.

Marketing

  • Develop an integrated marketing, advertising and communications plan to promote the organization's brands and events
  • Manage advertising content and placement for the organization and select events
  • Work with Creative Director on the creation and production of all collateral (print and digital)
  • Maintain brand standards, including key messages, brand pillars and mission statement
  • Work with other local entities (Visit KC, event venues, professional teams, etc.) for marketing city-wide events (I.E. NCAA events, Big 12 events+)
  • Develop bid materials with the Director of National Events and outside entities in efforts to secure future sporting events in Kansas City
  • Manage large scope marketing projects (i.e. website redesign) to further organization goals
  • Work with department Directors to manage marketing budgets for events/opportunities throughout the year
  • Oversee creation of sponsorship collateral including sponsorship decks, contracts and marketing inventory
  • Serve as the Greater Kansas City Sports Commission & Foundation representative to marketing partners and other organizations as deemed necessary
  • Oversee a MarComms team currently comprised of Creative Director, (possible) Communications Manager and Digital Content Specialist
  • Coordinate marketing efforts with the VP Corporate and Community Relations on corporate partner initiatives
  • Attend industry related seminars
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Four-year degree preferred in marketing or a related field
  • Minimum five (5) years' experience within a marketing and communications environment (digital advertising and/or agency experience preferred)
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of the Greater Kansas City community and sports scene
  • Demonstrated expertise in marketing-related software including Microsoft Dynamics, Meta Business Suite, Google Ads and SharePoint
  • Must be a team player willing to work occasional evenings and weekends at events
  • Must be a communicative and empathetic leader with the willingness to jump in and be hands on to meet tight deadlines
