Position Summary:

The Director of Nursing, Behavioral Health will be responsible for the oversight of the inpatient behavioral health units and service line in the Fairfield region which includes the Westport Campus as well as the inpatient and behavioral health unit in the emergency department at St. Vincents Medical Center. The Director will collaborate with physician leaders, the management team and relevant clinical and administrative leaders to plan comprehensive programs and ensure that the highest level of quality patient centered care is delivered.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Ensures quality patient care by setting standards and identifying opportunities for improvements for nursing practice and client care that are evidence based for the behavioral health specialties
  • Collaborates with Behavioral Health Network and other Hartford Healthcare nursing colleagues to promote and standardize best practices in behavioral health nursing
  • Creates a thriving, trusting team culture. Provides team with clear expectations, positive and constructive feedback to maximize potential and improve performance. Encourages professional development, identifying opportunities for growth and ongoing education.
  • Participates in the preparation and monitoring of operating and capital budgets in collaboration with the department leaders; forecasts demand for services and conducts trending analysis.
  • Creates, presents and integrates service line business and operational plans/metrics which align with the achievement of key hospital strategic objectives
  • Facilitates continuous performance improvement by encouraging innovation, supporting reasonable risk-taking, being open to new ideas and keeping up to date in the clinical arena. Contributes to continuous performance improvement by participating in quality initiatives and promoting a safe working environment (risk management and safety goals)
  • Identifies cutting edge nursing quality indicators, developmental needs, performance improvement, research initiatives and other activities that sustain and advance a culture of excellence
  • Collaborates with members of the medical team and clinical team regarding treatment protocols, planning, and interventions to produce positive client outcomes. Ensures that interventions and nursing care plans are timely and accurately documented
  • Serve as a coach and mentor to leaders and staff; someone who drives clinical performance, evidence-based practices, and compassionate patient centered care

Qualifications

  • Bachelors and Master's degrees are required. At least one degree must be in Nursing
  • Current license in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut
  • Four plus years of progressive leadership experience is required
  • Experience within a complex behavioral health nursing setting
  • The ability to work with diverse groups of providers, clinicians, nursing staff and all disciplines and appreciate their contributions to the strategic direction of the healthcare system
  • Intellectually facile, will have the ability to be conceptually creative, grasp large amounts of information quickly, and articulate conclusions in a clear manner
  • Visible leader with excellent interpersonal communication skills who relates well with all levels of the organization
  • A creative, forward-thinking leader with the proven ability to engage, coach and mentor direct reports, colleagues and other key stakeholders
  • A demonstrated track record designing strategies and delivering solutions in areas including, but not limited to, patient experience, patient safety, employee engagement and workflow redesign
  • Highly effective analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communications skills required - both written and verbal
