Moran Towing Corporation (www.morantug.com) has an exciting opportunity available as a Director of Payroll in our Jacksonville, FL or New Canaan, CT officeThis is a hybrid role that will require you to work in the office 3 days per week.This full-time, exempt position reports to the Chief People Officer.Position Summary:The Payroll Director will be responsible for the oversight of all payroll functions and teams across the Moran organization. This will include leading the organization through the payroll integration between Moran's Maritime (Tugs and Transportation Barges) and Moran's Specialty Services Business Units (Environmental, Diving and Construction). This includes the selection and potential conversion to a different HCM as well as leading a team of payroll professionals and managers, to ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll across the organization while complying with all applicable payroll laws and regulations. The Payroll Director provides consultation services and support to employees, managers, and various departments on payroll-related matters. In addition, the incumbent recommends, implements, and promotes payroll policies and procedures consistent with legal requirements and the pay culture of the organization. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited, to:
- Lead and manage the payroll integration to ensure successful adaptation of the existing or new HCM.
- Oversee the payroll process for the company, including:
- Ensuring payroll is accurate and timely.
- Ensuring compliance with all applicable payroll and employer tax laws and regulations. Resolving payroll discrepancies or errors in the payroll system.
- Communicating with employees and managers on payroll-related matters.
- Lead a team of payroll professionals.
- Provide oversight and mentoring around best payroll practices remaining ahead of the curve on the most recent payroll technologies, laws, and regulations.
- Participate in the performance management process including setting performance goals/ expectations and evaluating performance.
- Develop and implement new written payroll policies and procedures and/or revise existing policies and procedures.
- Ensure maximum use of the HCM's capabilities to augment payroll efficiencies; identify and implement opportunities for automation.
- Create long-term and short-term strategic goals for continuous improvement of the payroll activities of the organization.
- Maintain advanced levels of knowledge of the company payroll system(s) and act as the internal expert on all payroll related matters.
- Oversee the payroll aspects of the annual 401(k) audit.
- Oversee and work directly with the finance teams across business units and facilitate the generation of payroll related financial reporting.
- Oversee and facilitate weekly certified payroll reporting, union and/or prevailing wage calculations, and any other related reporting or notifications, including periodic union audits.
- Act as the Time and Attendance system administrator and work in conjunction with payroll management team and staff responsible for adding, editing, and/or deleting all Time and Attendance elements including pay codes, time off policies and profiles, work rules, etc.
- Oversee the timely review and filing of tax filings.es.
- Ensure all tax jurisdictions are correctly maintained and resolve all tax errors or issues.
- Coordinate with Human Resources teams to ensure employee related data integrity.
- Work with other departments to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of payroll information.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 or more years in a similar senior level payroll leadership position.
- Minimum 10+ years of strong, progressive 'hands on' payroll processing experience in multi-location environments, including preparing and reconciling payroll taxes, and generating automated and ad hoc reports for internal and external constituencies.
- Previous experience with payroll integrations.
- Expert computer skills using MS Windows 11 Office Suite and integrated/automated payroll systems.
- Strong skills using and understanding the flow of transactions in an integrated and automated payroll accounting system.
- Experience with UKG, ADP or other advanced enterprise level HCM payroll platforms.
- Multi state processing and tax experience.
- Multi-union and multi-jurisdictional certified payroll reporting experience.
- Demonstrated exceptional leadership skills.
- Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills.
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy around complex data.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work to meet all deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work well independently and with all organizational levels within a team environment.
- Ability to travel overnight as required by business needs.
- This position is currently hybrid and will require a minimum of 3 days in the office.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification.

Pay TransparencyMoran Towing Corporation offers generous benefits, opportunities for professional growth, and competitive salaries based on geographic location. Our target pay range for the Director of Payroll position is $110,000 -$150,000 per year. This pay range represents Moran's commitment to pay transparency and is a reasonable estimate of possible compensation for this role at the time of posting.
