  • Responsible for the prescription, delegation and coordination of patient care provided in Pharmacy
Planning Responsibilities
  • Ensure the Pharmacy Department operates in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, is properly staffed, and operates within the assigned budget guidelines
  • Twenty-four-hour accountability for the operational and clinical direction of Pharmacy
  • Responsible for the recommendation, development, and implementation of policies and procedures, and keeps the Chief Nursing Officer informed of progress and potential problems
  • Maintain reports, records, and statistics for administrative and regulatory purposes; ensures compliance with requirements of regulatory agencies, state and federal laws, as well as with human resource, across the organization and departmental policies
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of current JCAHO standards and other regulatory requirements relating to areas of responsibility; understand standards and implement strategies necessary for compliance and actively participate in hospital-wide compliance efforts
  • Remain active in pharmacy organizations to ensure knowledge of current trends in pharmacy and apply applicable programs at Scottish Rite
  • Must be able to independently lift and carry up to 25 pounds and assist with lifting by use of devices or other personnel, patients or objects greater than 25 pounds. Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing in English understandable by all developmental levels.
  • Physical requirements are classified as medium work, that of exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • May require long periods of standing/ walking / working with hands
  • Preparation of medication require: visual acuity of 20/40 with correction when tested using standard Snelling wall chart; the ability to feel to differentiate size, shape, textures, and temperatures; the ability to hear accurately enough to distinguish telephone conversation.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing in English understandable by all developmental levels.
Staff Management Responsibilities:
  • Ensure staff understands and demonstrate ability to work effectively with children with different developmental needs
  • Provide effective departmental leadership
  • Develop and model departmental goals and objectives which are consistent with the Scottish core values
  • Set clear expectations for staff performance and holds staff accountable for outcomes
  • Foster communication between and among individuals and components of the organization by coordinating internal activities
  • Monitor and evaluate individual staff performance on an ongoing, equitable, and consistent basis; provide feedback, counseling and/or coaching in a timely manner, as appropriate
  • Verify licensure of professional staff, ensure licenses remain current
  • Constructively and collaboratively negotiate issues within or between departments and is considerate of views of others
  • Develop programs to promote professional growth for all staff
  • Provide developmentally-appropriate medications and information counseling for infants, toddlers, pre-school and school age children, adolescents, and family members
  • May be required to perform provision of direct patient care which requires the ability to walk, stand, reach, crouch, kneel and stoop.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Nursing Officer in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs to promote recruitment, retention, development, and continuing education of Pharmacy staff, as well as mechanisms for recognizing staff expertise in the provision of patient care
Financial Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the annual budget preparation and development for Pharmacy through collaboration with staff members and other pertinent clinical leaders and maintain department spending within those guidelines
  • Staff the department within budgetary guidelines
  • Supervise all aspects of medication use ensuring safe and effective use of medications at Scottish Rite for Children
  • Work with other departments and administration to coordinate the pharmacy function throughout Scottish Rite
Quality Management and Management of Information Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the planning, promotion and implementation of Pharmacy's quality monitoring and performance improvement activities; assist with setting priorities for improvement
  • Responsible for the systematic evaluation of the current practice and delivery model in Pharmacy to improve the quality, appropriateness and efficiency of patient care delivery
  • Ensure the appropriateness of information management systems for the department as well as proper use of information by staff in accordance with Scottish Rite information management plan
  • Participate in the evaluation, selection, and integration of health care technology and information systems that support patient care needs to promote quality patient/family care and efficient use of resources in Pharmacy
Communication Responsibilities:
  • Communicate effectively with all staff, patients/families, visitors, etc.
  • Promote and role-model appropriate interpersonal skills including effective leadership, conflict resolution, team building, and meeting skills
  • Communicate with Chief Nursing Officer, staff, physicians, patients, parents, other departments, etc, in an effective, and positive manner
  • Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing in English understandable by all developmental levels.
  • Keep staff informed of significant changes and events through regularly scheduled meetings and individual conferences
  • Collaborate with the medical staff, nursing, and other clinical disciplines for improvement of the quality and appropriateness of patient care in Pharmacy
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient/family and staff information and monitor to assure staff adherence with confidentiality policies
Professional/Personal Development Responsibilities:
  • Promote and participate in educational opportunities and research activities that contribute to the improvement of management skills and practice as well as the advancement of Departmental/Scottish Rite goals
  • Participate in a variety of meaningful educational programs and opportunities for personal and professional growth and development
  • Responsible for the development of mechanisms to promote educational and advancement goals of Pharmacy staff
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Bachelor's degree or Pharm.D. degree in Pharmacy from an accredited institution required
  • IV certification required
  • Current pharmacy license in good standing with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy required
  • Minimum of 5 years of Hospital Pharmacy experience required
  • Minimum 2 years of management experience required
  • Good management skills, computer knowledge, and working knowledge of budget and statistical reporting needed
  • Pediatric population experience preferred
