What Health System Pharmacy contributes to Cardinal Health

Pharmacy Operations is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective coordination of Cardinal Health's pharmacy operations that service acute care hospitals, hospital retail customers, ambulatory care and alternate site facilities, oncology and cardiology practices as well as retail customers.

Health System Pharmacy is responsible for providing customized pharmacy program solutions that reduce costs and improve patient care quality for hospitals, health systems and other integrated healthcare providers may also consult with and advise healthcare team on prescribed medications, supplies and related processes.

Job Summary

The Director of Pharmacy plans, organizes and directs all functions of the hospital pharmacy services. Assures all legal, regulatory, and accrediting requirements are maintained at the best demonstrated practice. Maintains a professional presence throughout the hospital and health system. Assures pharmacy services and activities are carried out to meet goals and standards of both Cardinal Health and the client/hospital.

This position reports to the EVP of Patient Care Services at TJ Regional, and the Director of Operations & Account Management for Cardinal Health. The Pharmacy Director must have a Pharmacy degree from an accredited Pharmacy School and be licensed in the State of Kentucky or have the ability to obtain that specific state license.

Responsibilities

* Develop, maintain, and update a pharmacy Policy and Procedure manual for the department.

* Establish and lead the hospital P&T committee, assuring (but not limited to) the following items are part of the committee meetings: current drug trends, formulary additions, formulary deletions, annual formulary approval, non-formulary drug use, drug shortages, cost control initiatives, updates to the Policy and Procedure manual, annual review of order sets and protocols, black box warning, ADR reporting, pharmacy intervention reporting, controlled substance audit reporting, automation reporting.

* Develop and maintain an Antibiotic Stewardship program, in conjunction with multidisciplinary team members.

* Participate in hospital committee meetings necessary to enhance practice and patient care.

* Meet or exceed all Accreditation Bodies (TJC, DNV, CMS, BOP) standards related to pharmacy.

* Assure there is a process for patient and department charges, and that they are accurately and timely posted to accounts.

* Purchase drugs and supplies in accordance with GPO bids and Cardinal Health best demonstrated practices.

* Develop and maintain information systems and other technology applications within the Pharmacy.

* Use Econotherapeutic best practices in formulary and cost control.

* Use Cardinal Health applications like DCOA, to analyze data and manage clinical initiatives.

* Responsible for all drug storage areas in accordance with legal and best demonstrated practice.

* Develop and oversee preparation and delivery of medication throughout the hospital.

* Establish standards and training for sterile product preparation in compliance with USP 795/797/800 non-sterile and sterile preparation standards, including annual review of master formulation records.

* Design, implement, maintain all pharmacy quality activities.

* Design, implement, and maintain medication safety program.

* Achieve acceptable scores on operations assessments/audits (PPA, Regulatory, Accreditation, BOP, etc).

* Manage the activities and performance of pharmacists, technicians, students, and interns.

* Recruit, hire, retain, and separate employees.

* Arrange/conduct hospital and pharmacy orientation for new hires.

* Develop and implement a training and competency program for all staff and maintain records of those completed competencies.

* Manage the pharmacy budget and all aspects related to the financial program.

* Reconcile financial information and communicate on a timely basis.

* Assure approval of MUE criteria, perform MUE, and report results in committee meetings.

* Assure adequate control and documentation of controlled substances.

* Has Power of Attorney to order Schedule II drugs.

* Develop and perform a process for all drug recalls.

* Lead departmental meetings, in-services, and quality improvement programs.

* Maintains all required training and education per department requirements (e.g. HealthStream, myLearning, Continuing Education).

* Adheres to hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

* Complies with all requirements related to risk management, safety, security, fire, and infection control. Complies with all applicable state, local and federal regulations.

* Maintains safety-integrity-professionalism of pharmacy at all times.

* Provide in-services to staff and hospital professional staff.

* Assure acquisition and renewal of all pharmacy licenses and permits and staff licenses.

* Annually review licenses for staff via Board of Pharmacy website.

* Direct monthly medication area inspections and have supporting documentation.

* Conducts periodic staff meetings.

* Perform special projects as requested.

* Perform as Staff Pharmacist as needed.

* Wears hospital badge identification while on duty.

* Meets dress code standards; appearance is neat and clean. Is conscientious in regard to personal hygiene.

* Treats patients and families with respect and dignity. Assures confidentiality of patient records.

* Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.

* Assists in the resolution of problems or concerns while being a supportive team member.

* Consistently strives to promote great customer service in all aspects of the job.

* Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

* Graduate of an ACPE accredited School of Pharmacy with a BS Pharmacy degree or higher.

* Must be a good standing licensed Pharmacist and/or eligible for licensure in the state of Kentucky.

* Prior hospital/inpatient experience OR completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency highly preferred.

* Management experience within a hospital/inpatient environment highly preferred.

* Board certification in a specific discipline preferred.

* Strong written and verbal communication skills.

* Excellent organization, presentation and leadership skills.

* Proven customer service skills.

* Ability to work on call or be in an on call rotation.

Anticipated salary range: $119,800 - $179,655.
