Director of Physical Laboratories

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Two (2) years of full-time experience supporting laboratory and scientific research operations. Experience with the operation and maintenance of scientific equipment and technology.

Preferred Qualifications:Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Engineering or Industrial Management. Four (4) years of progressively responsibleexperience. In lieu of a Master's degree, a Bachelor's degree and six (6) years of full-time experience in the administration of laboratory facilities in an academic or research institution including operations management and budget management. Technical drafting and design experience. Construction and renovation management. CPR and AED certification.

Brief Description of Duties:The Director of Laboratories has full responsibility for the support operation for a vibrant graduate and faculty research program and a large undergraduate teaching program with the primary aim to safely and effectively maximize the productivity of the department's research mission. The director of laboratories acts as the Department's liaison to the university on all appropriate technical matters. The director also supervises technical, administrative and business staff, manages facilities and departmental instrumentation, and monitors budget for operational groups.

  • Facility Management:
    • Plan capital projects and renovations with the goal to keep the Physics and Astronomy facility a safe and efficient facility that supports the directions of its educational and research programs.
    • Prepare justifications for budgets for major projects.
    • Collaborate with building manager on internal projects including emergency repairs.
    • Facilitate office spaces for the department personnel working with department chair and building manager.
    • Allocate office spaces for visiting faculty, researchers and graduate students. Implement policies for building security.
  • Manage department operational groups (Instructional Labs, Electronics shop, Machine Shop, Helium Liquefier Facility and Building Management).
  • Provide engineering support for research and instructional laboratory layout and equipment, design for Physics Building, Astronomy (ESS Building, 4FL) and the Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP, Mathematics Building, 6FL).
  • Monitor overall staff performance and generate performance programs and evaluation for direct report staff.
  • Safety Management:
    • Coordinate all federal, state and University code compliance including OSHA, OFPC and DEC.
    • Manage building safety and security; liaison with University Police to ensure the safety of building occupants and rectification of any safety code violations.
    • Manage and coordinate Safety Warden Program and its training (AED, CPR).
  • Fiscal Management:
    • Manage, develop, monitor and maintain budget and billing and fee processes for Machine Shop, Electronic Shop and Instructional Labs, ensuring departmental goals and commitments are met.
    • Develop and manage revenue streams for support of shops, teaching and research programs as departmental facilities.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned and appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
