Job Description:

The Director for Quality and Safety for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology directs quality and safety efforts in both inpatient and ambulatory settings. The Director will report directly to the Department Chair and will collaborate with the Vice Chairs of Clinical Operations, DEI, and Research to optimize and oversee the quality and safety activities within our department. The Director will provide leadership, strategic direction and partnership with the Administrative Director to oversee the QI project team. The Director will serve as a member of the Department's Executive Committee, indirectly report to the Chief Quality Officer, and will have 40% protected time for the position. The Director may spend their clinical time as a generalist or a subspecialist.

General Responsibilities in quality and safety

  • Develop specific quality initiatives and safety strategies that follow the central mission, scoped and customized to the inpatient and ambulatory environments.
  • Leverage data sources to identify Q+S priorities and opportunities by understanding and being facile with data sources and analytic techniques, oversight of data harmonization efforts, and directing the efforts of the department data analysts in this regard.
  • Respond to specific events and reports by, as needed, helping to direct debriefings, clinician interviews, chart reviews and root cause analyses, activating peer support, and collaborating with Q+S leaders in other departments.
  • Present at relevant department and hospital meetings, prepare consequent reports and policies, and craft and implement appropriate change, including:
  • Regular case reviews in obstetrics and gynecology in consultation with the perinatal safety nurse and medical directors of inpatient obstetrics and gynecology and the VC of Clinical Operations and Strategy.
  • Review of RL reports and preparation of responses in coordination with the appropriate inpatient and outpatient medical directors and VC of Clinical Operations and Strategy.
  • Case presentations at quality and safety meetings.
  • Attendance at the BMC Daily Safety Huddle, weekly QI leadership and Patient Safety Steering Committee, biweekly Clinical Care Committee, and monthly GYN QI meetings.
  • Lead quarterly QI updates for the OBGYN department.
  • Advise residents on case selection and presentation for department Morbidity and Mortality conferences.
  • With the department Quality and Safety Project specialist, work with the inpatient and outpatient leaders to organize and implement new processes and technology.
  • Serve as a voice for quality and safety issues and efforts at department and hospital meetings, including collaboration with the Quality and Patient Safety department, participation in internal QA presentations, communication of department and hospital Q+S efforts and priorities, and participation in graduate medical education priorities related to Q+S.
  • Serve as a liaison for internal and external Q+S evaluation and work including regulatory reporting, credentialing site visits, and collaboration with risk management and our malpractice insurer.
  • Identify and support opportunities for quality improvement, adopting best practices forwarded by professional societies or identified in other systems, and collaborate with relevant department and hospital leaders to advance quality and equity work.
  • Lead department efforts in credentialing and privileging, including FPPE and OPPE processes.
  • Collaborate with education leadership to support fellowship/resident/student requirements around QIPS.

Program Implementation areas:

  • Assist the Chair in the development and implementation of the quality and safety strategic plan for the department.
  • In partnership with the inpatient obstetrics director, lead initiatives in improving obstetric outcomes, including hemorrhage, breastfeeding and SMM reduction.
  • In partnership with the inpatient gynecology director, lead initiatives in improving gynecologic outcomes, including reduction of postoperative infections and length of stay.
  • In partnership with the ambulatory medical director, lead initiatives in improving quality outcomes in the department outpatient spaces.
  • Work with the Vice Chair of Research to ensure that there is synergy between the department research and Q&S efforts.
  • Work with the Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the planning and analysis of data around initiatives aiming to improve health equity.
  • Work with the Vice Chair of Education around quality and safety education for residents and medical students.
  • Work with the director of simulation on the development and execution of sims for faculty, staff, and residents.
  • Oversee quarterly Teams Training.
  • Participation in the Improvement Learning Academy.
  • Represent the department and BMC at PNQIN and other statewide and national organization meetings.
  • Coordinate onboarding for new clinicians in risk management.
  • Ensure regular risk management training for clinicians and nurses, including FHR tracing education and mandatory annual grand rounds.
  • Collaborate to build a culture that supports reporting and reconciliation of reports of racism and discrimination in department inpatient units, clinics, and all areas of administrative operations.
  • Partner with the department administrative director to oversee the work of the quality specialist and clinical data analyst.

Qualifications:

  • Qualified candidates must possess a doctor of medicine (MD/DO) or equivalent degree from an accredited institution; AND be eligible for a Boston University academic appointment at the Clinical/Associate Professor level or higher.
  • Board certified in OB/GYN.
  • Minimum of 5 years of quality and safety-related experience or adjacent work.
  • Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Massachusetts.
  • Eligible for medical staff membership at BUMG.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Current clinical practice in obstetrics and gynecology is preferred.
