POSITION SUMMARY The Director of Security will oversee all security operations in support of the company's core business and ensure the safety of tenants, visitors, ESB Observatory guests, employees and properties. The Director will supervise a security staff of approximately 200, develop strategic plans and procedures to manage risk, and ensure vulnerability mitigation and respond to crisis. This individual will integrate and coordinate security activities with other ESRT departments and ESB Observatory. The Director will lead security for high profile events that often include famous celebrities and dignitaries and will maintain working relationships with NYPD, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and law enforcement agencies. Additionally, The Director of Security will provide regular reports directly to the company's senior leadership. RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Operations:
    • Manage and supervise security-related personnel including armed and unarmed persons, 3rd party security service providers, explosive detection canine teams, messenger center operations, and lobby concierge
    • Respond to emergencies and events related to protests, stunts, and criminal activities
    • Direct and supervise investigations of criminal activity, and effect lawful private citizen arrests, when necessary
    • Coordinate with Secret Service and other law enforcement entities or private services associated with visits by dignitaries and heads of state
    • Partner and work closely with Property Management Teams to ensure safety and security awareness programs are strategically designed and understood by those they impact
    • Partner and work closely with Human Resources Team to assist with ESRT-related staff terminations/disciplinary conferrals and perform investigative support
    • Partner and work closely with Public Relations/Brand Marketing Teams to help build the ESRT brand and minimize negative publicity and Support VIP escorts and ensure overall safety and security to participants
    • Partner and work closely with Leasing Teams to provide overview of in-place security to tenant prospects
    • Partner and work closely with ESB Observatory Team to provide security-related services to ensure a safe and secure environment for all guests and employees
    • Partner and work closely with ESRT Information Technology Team to provide local law enforcement and other government-related information re: criminal activities carried out by means of computers or the internet. Engage with NYPD and FBI Cyber-Crime team members
    • Partner and work closely with ESRT Legal Team to provide incident reports, video, and evidence that may develop into legal action and review requests for information and/or video from local law enforcement via subpoena
    • Partner and work closely with ESRT/ESB Crisis Management Team for the Business Continuity Plan and partner with potential governmental first responders to ensure a seamless emergency response and operation
    • Cultivate and maintain relationships with NYPD, FBI, US Secret Service, NY State Police, US Department of State, Department of Homeland Security, FDNY, business improvement districts, and others
    • Conduct property Threat Vulnerability Surveys and partner with local law enforcement to effectively address, when necessary. Conduct tabletop exercises
    • Perform frequent building familiarization drills with first responders
    • Serve as the building representative and contact for the NYS Security Guard Registry
    • Schedule and conduct liaison meetings to enhance the open lines of communication and emergency preparedness, as appropriate
    • Respond to tenant complaints and implement appropriate corrective action
    • Oversee post orders for effective and efficient coverage; ensure real-time intelligence is considered
    • Planning:
    • Develop and oversee strategic plans, annual budget and long-term capital plan
    • Develop and implement security and safety programs and policy
    • Provide training programs for security staff that is above industry standards
    • Address perimeter hardening and implement access control and technology solutions
    • Monitor the threat landscape and respond to external intelligence information. Plan for and respond to rapid changes during periods of elevated alert
    • Prepare contingency plans for emergencies, i.e. strikes, worldwide events that may impact the building and develop emergency response procedures
    • Maintain knowledge of security and management procedures, equipment, protocols, threats and countermeasures
    • Interface with insurance investigators and attorneys
    • Maintain a good working knowledge of criminal and civil law
    • Management/Administration:
    • Oversee security related contracts including electronic equipment maintenance agreements
    • Ensure compliance with and maintain records with regard to Article 7A of the General Business Law (security guard licensure, training, background checks, etc.)
    • Maintain files on reported incident/accident reports and brief appropriate stakeholders on such.
    • Research and prepare RFPs for equipment purchases and portfolio-wide contract services
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
    • Success for the Director of Security at ESRT is when all teams work together to achieve company goals to lease space, sell observatory tickets, manage the balance sheet and achieve sustainability goals.
    • The Director will be an effective leader and manager of the security team, ensuring the safety and security of the Empire State Building and ESRT buildings and its occupants, while also a trusted advisor to senior management and partner to other department heads.
REQUIRED SKILLS / ABILITIES
    • Proven experience in security management and/or law enforcement
    • Strong working knowledge of pertinent law and the law enforcement community
    • Experience with real-time intelligence, critical infrastructure protection, counterterrorism, and large-scale event planning/protection
    • Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise security personnel and third-party service providers
    • Proficient in developing and implementing security-related procedures and plans for risk management and vulnerability mitigation
    • Skilled in coordinating security activities, including perimeter hardening, access control, and emergency response procedures
    • Capable of conducting thorough investigations and performing lawful private citizen arrests when necessary
    • Excellent communication skills for effective collaboration with law enforcement, emergency management, fire safety, and other stakeholders
    • Ability to prepare and manage security-related budgets and contracts
    • Strong administrative skills, including the ability to maintain records and interface with senior management
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in an area of study relevant to this position, or 10 years of experience of increasing responsibility within security, and/or law enforcement/intelligence field, including 5 years of experience in a leadership role for a comparably sized or larger organization
    • Possess a strong working knowledge of pertinent law and the law enforcement community
    • Commercial real estate experience preferred but not required

$250,000 - $300,000 a year Salary is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, job location, size of property where applicable, and/or certifications. In addition to your base salary, ESRT provides discretionary annual bonuses.
