Position Type: Administration/DirectorDate Posted: 12/6/2024Location: Gale T Bartow Administration OfficeDirector Special Services Blue Springs School District 2025-2026 Position Summary: The Director of Special Services assists the Assistant Superintendent of Special Services in developing and maintaining quality special services programs and services. The Director works closely with the Assistant Superintendent to ensure compliance and student achievement of goals. The Director works with specialized teams, building-level teams, and families to ensure quality of services and supports for students with disabilities.
  • This position reports to the Assistant Superintendent of Special Services
  • This is an Exempt, 12-month agreement. Salary will be commensurate with the education and experience.
Essentials Functions:
  • Assists the Assistant Superintendent of Special Services in ensuring compliance with policies and procedures of the Board of Education, federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and mandates.
  • Consults with sta?, parents and private agencies regarding students with disabilities and programs o?ered.
  • Acts as a resource to parents, buildings in matters of special education and Section 504 policy and procedure.
  • Assists the Assistant Superintendent of Special Services in program planning, program and services development, and general delivery of special education and Section 504.
  • Assists the Assistant Superintendent of Special Services with supervision of consultants and departmental sta?.
  • Assists with supervision and evaluation of teams as determined by the Assistant Superintendent of Special Services.
  • Assists in the development and adaptation of curriculum for specialized services.
  • Fosters collaborative relationships between departments and with building administrators.
  • Serves as a liaison between the public school and private agencies.
  • Attends parent meetings requiring special education or 504 administrative support.
  • Promotes high student achievement for all students.
  • Develops and delivers high quality professional development.
  • Assists in the development and monitoring of the special education and 504 budget.
  • Assists in preparing reports as required by federal, state, and local agencies Monitors sta? caseloads and student progress.
  • Assists in recruitment, selection, and recommendation for hiring of special services personnel.
Other Functions:
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include planning and managing projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records; operating standard office equipment; and utilizing pertinent software applications. KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include personnel practices applied within a school district environment; interpreting contract language; and codes, regulations, and laws related to the job functions. ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job- related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include maintaining confidentiality; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; communicating with diverse groups; working with detailed information and frequent interruptions; and adapting to changing priorities. Responsibility: Responsibilities include working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; tracking budget expenditures. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is substantial opportunity to impact the organization's services. Work Environment: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment. Background Check: Employment in this position is contingent upon consent to and successful completion of a pre-employment background check, which may include a criminal background check, reference checks, verification of work history, and verification of any required academic credentials, licenses, and/or certifications, with results acceptable to the Blue Springs School District. Background check information will be used in a confidential, non-discriminatory manner consistent with state and federal law. Experience: Valid Missouri Teacher Certi?cation required with an endorsement in special education. Master's Degree or higher in special education, educational leadership, or related ?eld. Administrative certi?cation required and experience in Special Education and Section 504 strongly preferred.
