SUMMARY
Under administrative direction, is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and controlling delivery of patient care. Also provides administrative direction to development and evaluation of all nursing personnel, and maintains operational aspects of the patient care unit in collaboration with supervisors and other support staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Plan and organizes patient care in SDS, PACU, ENDO, CSR, and Operating Room and ensures continuity of care based on knowledge of clinical nursing needs of patient, evaluating through assessment, planning, intervention, reevaluation, written documentation, observation, and comparison to established standards.
Provides oversight to High-Level Disinfection and Sterilization procedures according to both the manufacturer's instructions and evidence-based guidelines.
Evaluates, assigns and coordinates nursing activities to ensure patient care, staff relations, and efficiency of service. Includes direction to Patient Care Coordinator, R.N., L.P.N/Surgical Technician, C.S.T., C.N.A. and Environmental Services.
Observes nursing care and visits patients and families to ensure that nursing care is carried out as directed, and treatment administered in.
Promotes open communication within the departments, and with other departments. Plans and conducts unit staff meetings regularly.
Develops culture of staff engagement and ownership.
Plan and maintains staffing pattern for the patient care unit meeting continuity of care and acuity level needs.
Coordinates the hiring, orientation, training, evaluation and development of personnel.
Investigates and resolves complaints or refers unusual problems to SVP Nursing Services.
Provides leadership and direction in accordance with organizational and departmental goals and objectives.
Encourages professional growth and development of self and nursing staff through a climate conducive to meeting identified educational needs of the organization and the departments.
Counsels employees and, as necessary, takes appropriate disciplinary action for infractions of policy.
Attends meetings of supervisory and administrative staff to discuss unit operation. Assists in developing and demonstrating budget for the departments. Participates and contributes to staff meetings.
Evaluates and sets standards for facilities and equipment, and monitors utilization of equipment and supplies.
Provides input in formulating patient care and department policies and procedures. Works in coordination with the support services, medical staff, other departments and administration.

Considers age-related factors in care, treatment, education, and evaluation of patients ranging from neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. Applies knowledge of age-related factors appropriately in accordance with professional standards and departmental policies and procedures.
Supports and/or participates in research programs approved by the Department of Nursing.
Implements CQI standards and programs to assure compliance with standards of Joint Commission, as required for full accreditation.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor Degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing, Masters Degree preferred, or willing to gain. Two to five years nursing experience and previous management experience preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from patients, families, employees, regulatory agencies, or community. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, patients, families and coworkers.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Current Registered nurse licensure in the State of Minnesota. BSL and ACLS certifications.
