Experience in an academic healthcare setting is highly desired. Strong laboratory operations background in a hospital setting is essential. Demonstrated skills leading and developing teams required. Founded in 1925, Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center (TMC) is the primary teaching hospital for the McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). Memorial Hermann-TMC provides leading-edge care in heart, neuroscience, orthopedics, women's health, general surgery, organ transplantation and much more. As one of only two certified Level I trauma centers in the greater Houston area, the hospital provides 24/7 emergency and trauma care.Position is responsible for executing system strategies and ensuring department operations provide delivery of quality laboratory services in an efficient and effective manner. Position is assigned responsibilities for multiple hospital laboratories and/or convenient care center laboratories. The Director, Regional Laboratory typically reports up to the VP, Laboratory Services.Job DescriptionMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation: Bachelor's Degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution required; MBA or MHA preferred.Licenses/Certifications: Registered (ASCP) Medical Technologist, Certified MLS (ASCP), OR Certified MLS(ASCP)CM required.Experience / Knowledge / Skills:
  • Five years of management experience in a clinical laboratory that demonstrates leadership responsibility.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Recognizes that customers include patients, physicians, administration and other departments. Implements and maintains effective processes to monitor and improve customer satisfaction. Supports System and campus customer service initiatives.
  • Conducts patient rounds when requested to assess customer satisfaction. Utilizes and supports the use of Partners in Caring principles.
  • Supports the System and System Laboratory Quality Initiatives. Utilizes and supports the use of Quality processes, techniques and principles to improve key processes. Ensures that processes are in place, which adequately monitor and ensure the validity of laboratory results. Ensures that laboratories meet system laboratory quality monitor thresholds. Participates in multidisciplinary teams to improve hospital processes.
  • Prepares annual operating and capital budgets for areas of responsibility. Monitors and manages the use of resources to ensure budgets are met. Improves operational and administrative process in order to reduce cost. Shows good judgment in the utilization of operating funds, capital funds and human resources.
  • Ensures staffing schedules meet the needs of clinical laboratory services. Works with staff to maximize productivity and minimize overtime.
  • Interviews potential candidates for vacancies utilizing Hiring for Fit principles. Collaborates with lab leadership (directors, managers, leads, Sr. MTs) on interviews and hiring. Utilizes retention strategies to maximize new employee engagement and minimize turn over.
  • Supports by actions and effectively communicates the vision, values and initiatives of Laboratory Services, the hospital and System. Effectively plans and assumes a leadership role in Laboratory Services' issues and initiatives. Provides an environment where employees reach their maximum potential and grow professionally and personally. Develops relationships with employees that foster trust and teamwork.
  • Ensures that operations are compliant to conditions and standards set forth by various governmental and accrediting agencies including TJC, FDA, CAP, AABB, HCFA, OSHA and CLIA.
  • Builds and maintains effective relationships with nurses and physicians, members of management, and employees. Is sensitive to the needs of others. Demonstrates the behavioral expectations in an exemplary manner.
  • Ensures that various administrative processes are completed with appropriate timeliness, accuracy, and in a manner compliant with System Policies and Procedures. Included are regularly scheduled processes such as payroll, purchasing, staffing, and HR processes, as well as special reports and initiatives.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors. Adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards, within budgetary specifications, including time management, supply management, productivity, and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education, skills competency, supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
