Grade 11 (Salaried)Position Description:The Director, Sponsored Programs Administration is responsible for leading and overseeing the management of sponsored programs throughout the University of Louisville, with a focus on federal contracts, agreements with corporate sponsors, and private non-profit clinical projects. In addition, the Director will provide strategic and operational management of contractual standards and negotiations, non-financial agreement support, and specialized project support. The Director will serve in a leadership capacity for internal and external constituents involved in UofL sponsored programs. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for sponsored programs, with an emphasis on contractual matters; review, develop, update, and administer contractual policies and position standards, including both legal and financial standards, ensuring compliance with sponsor and institutional guidelines and regulations and facilitating the efficient management of the University's sponsored programs portfolio.
  • Coordinate and oversee key functional areas within Sponsored Programs Administration; specifically, contract negotiations, non-financial agreement support, and special projects requiring significant intra-unit and intra-institutional coordination. Oversight includes the supervision and mentoring of and collaboration with personnel within the Office of Sponsored Programs Administration.
  • Provide oversight and accountability for sponsored programs outcomes (contracting emphasis), including compliance with relevant standards and requirements, negotiation turnaround timelines, and negotiation completion goals. Serve as an authorized signatory for Sponsored Programs Administration projects in accordance with university signature authority delegation.
  • Facilitate, manage, and ensure completion of projects requiring cross-functional specialized support. Negotiate strategic and complex contracts and agreements in support of the university's research and innovation mission.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external constituents on contractual operations and matters related to the university's sponsored programs portfolio. Provide guidance on university policy and sponsor requirements and establish effective lines of communication with principal investigators, business managers, and personnel across the institution.
  • Develop and deliver unit, management, and institutional reports in support of internal business processes and strategic metrics reports to support research leadership decision making.
  • Foster a strong culture of client service, support, professionalism, accountability, and compliance within Sponsored Programs Administration.
  • Obtain and maintain an advanced knowledge of legal, regulatory, and policy matters affecting the university's sponsored programs portfolio and provide education to OSPA personnel and the UofL research community on these matters. Identify and manage/mitigate emerging trends that may affect the conduct of sponsored programs at the university.
  • Act as the primary OSPA liaison with the Office of General Counsel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
  • JD or MBA. Six or more (6+) years of related experience in contract negotiation/administration in a research-intensive institution or company.
  • Demonstrated management and leadership abilities.
  • Significant experience drafting and negotiating complex transactional agreements.
  • Familiarity with research laws and regulations affecting university research, such as HIPAA, FAR clauses, KY Board of Claims Act, etc.
