We are an organization of professionals and community partners that help people reach their individualized goals.Disabilities Advocate (Allegheny County, Pittsburgh Office and some remote working)Part time (20 hours) Salary Range: $19-$21 per hourProvides advocacy and family support for individuals who have intellectual disabilities or autism and their families. Provides information, resources technical assistance and advocacy in the areas of special education, transition, home and community-based services, government benefits and adult services. Provides technical assistance and advocacy for families and students from birth through age 21 who are eligible for special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) the Rehabilitation Act. Provides technical assistance and advocacy for individuals of all ages who qualify for services from the Office of Developmental Programs. Reports to the President of the Arc of Greater Pittsburgh. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supports the achievement of individuals' personal outcomes.Primarily provides information, resources, technical assistance and advocacy for students from birth to 21 years of age and their families related to their education and transition. May provide information and support to adults, based on case flow.Works with families to gather and analyze facts of individual cases and utilize this information to support them to resolve their issues related to Individual Education Plans.Maintains up-to-date knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies as they relate to special education.Prepares and maintains necessary records and required reports.Attends in-service and other training as required.Performs other related duties as assigned. Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice.QUALIFICATIONS:The equivalent of a bachelor's degree in social sciences or education or 1-2 years of related experience advocating for and supporting individuals with disabilities and their families. Negotiation skills, ability to problem solve, and a proven ability to work effectively with other professionals, families and system officials is required. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to set priorities and organize multiple tasks. Ability to work well both independently and with others. Ability to travel locally. Computer literacy. Act 33/34 clearances. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Self advocates and Family members are encouraged to apply. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
