DISPATCHER

Salary: 111 - $ 34,175.00 minimum salary

Purpose of Classification

Performs complex work in emergency communications support of Sheriff's department. Duties include receiving telephone calls on the regular phone lines and 911 emergency lines, entering data into automated systems, verifying data and relaying information. Positions in this class perform routine clerical support and identify needed corrective actions to resolve discrepancies; answer questions; and maintain documents and records.

Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Answers telephone and takes messages; drafts correspondence, memoranda, etc., for the supervisor's signature/response; transmits information to county departments as needed.

Receives telephone calls on the regular phone lines and 911 emergency lines form county residents asking for help in different problems they may be experiencing; questions callers to determine their locations, and the nature of their problems to determine type of response needed.

Assigns deputy sheriff to respond to a call and makes sure the deputy responding has the proper back up for the particular type of call including nature of call; notifies Sheriff, Chief Deputy, Captain, and corresponding Lieutenants, such as CID, Patrol, etc.

Uses NCIC .and/or TCIC. tele type networking in doing checks for stolen items, wanted persons and so forth; records details of calls, dispatches, and messages; may assemble, organize, and tabulate statistical data, and prepare routine statistical reports and charts.

Prepares various department documents requiring knowledge of department policies, programs, and procedures and which may involve researching, compiling, analyzing, retrieving and/or summarizing data.

Additional Functions

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers for Telecommunicators (TCOLE) certification required.

ADA Compliance

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of lightweight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

This is a Civil Service covered position. Testing requirements will follow section 2.32 of the Civil Service Rules and Regulations Handbook. Probationary period will follow section 2.35 of the Civil Service Rules and Regulations Handbook.
