This is achieved by supporting a diverse workforce, continuous training, and a collaborative approach to safeguarding the campus through extensive interaction and partnerships with students, faculty, staff, visitors, and the broader Hartford community. Campus Safety is part of the Division of Student Success and Enrollment Management. The goal of this division is to support the mission of Trinity College by delivering exceptional educational, athletic, recreational, and developmental experiences focused on the principles and values of community, diversity, equity, and inclusivity. The staff in Campus Safety play a vital role in supporting a positive student experience and helping to create a campus environment that supports student retention and graduation. Our policies support the mission of the college and in doing so we have emphasized the following key areas in our policies to enhance Campus Safety's support of an inclusive campus climate: implementation of anti-discrimination/bias-free policing policy; increased focus on community policing/engagement; formalized & enhanced accountability systems; and the development of crisis intervention/de-escalation and use of force policies. The Dispatcher will provide communications for the delivery of Campus Safety services; dispatch Campus Safety Officers for routine and emergency situations; receive incoming communications via telephone, web-based program alerts, or radio relating to Campus Safety services.
  • Serve as the initial point of contact for Campus Safety services, handling calls for service, general inquiries, and other requests with professionalism, empathy, and compassion.
  • Assist the students, faculty, and staff, of a diverse campus through a customer-service approach while working in the dispatch center.
  • Receive incoming communication relating to Campus Safety services of the College.
  • Operate the Campus Safety radio communication system to dispatch Campus Safety personnel for the performance of duties.
  • Support flow of information to and from Campus Safety Officers over the radio system, including information from other outside law enforcement agencies.
  • Receive emergency fire, medical, and burglar alarms, and deliver relevant information to responding patrols.
  • Keep supervisors informed of all incidents and make appropriate notification of on-call personnel based upon published lists.
  • Maintain or monitor relevant computer databases and reporting systems during assigned tour.
  • Enter incident data into Report Exec Dispatch computer-based reporting system.
  • Monitor POMCO personal safety device alert website.
  • Monitor SALTO graphical mapping/card access system software.
  • Monitor Blue light emergency phone network.
  • Proactively monitor a robust video surveillance system to deter crime, inform patrols of suspicious activity, and research unfolding or recent events.
  • Monitor the Campus Safety office during assigned shifts, addressing walk-in inquiries, requests for service, and related administrative tasks.
  • Maintain, and be able to access critical information related to college operations such as:
    • Daily schedules, policies, and bulletins
    • Daily Crime Log
    • Clery Act Log
    • Daily Vehicle Tow Log
    • Records related to students, faculty, and staff, including housing and phone numbers
    • Blue light emergency phones on campus
  • Perform all other duties and tasks assigned.
Qualifications
  • A high school diploma is required, academic or professional experience at the college level is preferred.
  • A demonstrated commitment to assisting and servicing diverse communities.
  • Must be able to prioritize, handle high-pressure situations and high-volume telephone and visitor traffic.
  • Must be able to use good judgment; be alert and have good observational skills; be comfortable in dealing with students, parents, staff, and the general public in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Two years of related experience and training in a campus safety environment is preferred; prior public safety or emergency dispatch experience is highly preferred.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Respond to urgent notifications from telephone lines, base radio, computer-generated alerts, and cameras.
  • Strong computer skills, typing with high accuracy.
  • Ability to anticipate and react appropriately in dealing with highly confidential matters.
