Pay Range: $22.14 - $31.16

NATURE OF WORK

This is responsible communications work in the operation of a public safety radio system, multi-line admin/911 telephone system and associated equipment.

Work also involves responsibility for the receipt and transmission of radio, telephone, and computer messages, and for dispatching police, fire, and rescue units and disseminating emergency and law enforcement information on an assigned shift. Work also includes the performance of related recordkeeping tasks. Initially, work is performed under close supervision; however, after an initial training period employees are expected to work independently within the predetermined policies and regulations of the department. Work is reviewed by observation and examination of records for conformance with standard operating procedures and quality of communications services provided. Supervision is received from an administrative superior. Must be able to work rotating shifts, including evenings, nights, and holidays. May be required to work extended shifts as needed. May be subject to emergency callout.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:

* Monitors, receives calls, and broadcasts on multiple radio frequencies; receives requests for police, fire and other emergency services by telephone or radio; determines nature of required assistance, location, and other pertinent information; dispatches required units according to standard operating procedures; keeps track of responder's locations and anticipates additional needs.

* Provides pre-arrival medical instruction based on prescribed protocols.

* Receives fire and burglar alarms by direct lines; maintains records of radio transmissions and telephone calls; records pertinent information including nature of complaint, responders assigned, and disposition; monitors cameras as needed.

* Provides support and receives requests for information from Fire, Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice and other authorized persons on a countywide basis.

* Utilizes computer terminal to access and retrieve information relative to motor vehicle registration, driver's licenses, criminal history, stolen vehicles, stolen articles, wants and warrants, and similar data; transmits information by radio or telephone.

* Maintains and validates county warrant files and Protection Orders

* Assists with coordination of prisoner transports.

* Receives and maintains sensitive information in a discrete and professional manner by maintaining confidentiality.

* Types and files a variety of forms and other documents in support of the public safety mission; prepares statistical reports.

* Serves as information desk, giving information to the public and answering inquiries; explains court process to citizens and various city ordinances and statutes.

* Performs other work which is consistent with the essential functions of the job.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

* Knowledge of the principles and practices of radio communications as well as the proper procedures used in emergency service dispatching.

* Knowledge of the processes involved in the system of Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD).

* Knowledge of the names and locations of principal streets and buildings, and general geography of the cities, county and adjacent areas to Dodge County Nebraska.

* Knowledge of the types, staffing requirements and uses of firefighting apparatus and police units.

* Ability to obtain accurate and complete information from callers who may be frantic and incoherent due to emergency conditions

* Ability to operate radio and telephone equipment quickly and accurately under heavy load conditions.

* Ability to speak clearly and concisely in a well-modulated voice and to use good diction.

* Ability to perform data entry while speaking on the telephone/radio.

* Ability to function accurately while working under considerable pressure.

* Ability to think and act quickly, calmly, and accurately in emergency situations.

* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, citizens, emergency responders, and supervisors.

* Skill in the operation of office machines utilizing alphanumeric keyboards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from high school or equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

* Possession of NCIC Certification.

* Employee must possess and maintain a valid Nebraska Driver's License when operating a vehicle.

* Certification in the Emergency Medical Dispatch Protocols.

* Must be current in CPR with Certification.
