Applicants hired into this position who are currently working for VA state government are eligible for a $5,000 retention bonus after 10 months of successful service with signature of an agreement for an additional 12-months of service. Current Virginia State Police employees working in a Dispatcher function are not eligible for a retention bonus. About the Position: As a Dispatcher Senior you will function as a lead worker in the Communications Center where you will provide support, guidance, and assistance to other dispatchers within the Communications Center by assisting them in performing their duties effectively and proficiently and by providing assistance to law enforcement and emergency personnel, the public, and the media. This position operates within a specific geographic area by sending and receiving information and sending emergency assistance or service equipment to assist law enforcement personnel or the public; operates a variety of equipment; maintains logs and records; accesses information through systems including Computer Aided-Dispatch (CAD), Virginia Crime Information Center (VCIN), National Crime Information Center (NCIC), National Law Enforcement Telecommunication System (NLETS) and other data bases. The person in this position is considered essential personnel and may have to work rotating shifts, holidays, and weekend. Minimum Qualifications • Working knowledge of federal and State regulations governing the use of radio transmission and exchange of emergency communications. • Some knowledge of the geographical areas that includes the cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and surrounding counties of Accomack, Brunswick, Gloucester, Greensville, Isle of Wight, James City, Mathews, Middlesex, Northampton, Southampton, Surry, Sussex, and York; and of emergency voice/data communications equipment and procedures. • Skill in operating a computer to include Microsoft Office software applications; in sound critical thinking; and in operating emergency dispatch equipment. • Demonstrated ability to make/monitor entries, inquiries, and retrievals made in various communications databases; to work under pressure and exercise sound judgment under stress; to multi-task; to handle complaints/compliments; to lead staff, provide training, and formal instruction; to ensure safety guidelines and regulations are followed during emergency situations; to prepare reports; to work holidays and weekends; to work independently and as member of a team; and to communicate effectively orally and in writing in English • High School Diploma or GED equivalent. • Must be Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certified within six months of hire, which requires either being a United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States and eligible for naturalization. Additional Considerations • Prior experience as a police/emergency service dispatcher is preferred.
