Job Description
Bronx Community Board 9, a New York City agency established to identify the needs of our community and advocate through city government to meet those requirements. In addition, we are empowered through the New York City Charter to make decisions on land use, budgets, public policy and the monitoring of city services. The Board is comprised of appointed volunteer residents who represent different areas of our district, which include Bronx River, Castle Hill, Clason Point, Harding Park, Parkchester, Park Stratton, Soundview, Unionport, and the Zerega Business Zone.
Responsibilities:
Under supervision of the District Manager and Deputy District Manager, assists in expediting, monitoring and evaluating of municipal services within the community district and actively participates in the coordination of delivery of these services. Serves as the principal director to office, performs related work and works closely with Deputy District Manager to support and inform the Boards planning, administrative and outreach activities. Responsibilities include processing constituent services request; providing administrative support to Board members, planning meetings, events; and working with Deputy District Manager on special projects. The District Director has a key role in the Boards liaison and troubleshooting activities and works closely with elected official's governmental agencies, residents, businesses, and service providers.
The District Director serves as a constituent consultant, a municipal manager, information source, community organizer, mediator, and advocate. Works to develop and implement procedures to improve the delivery of services to the district.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists in the day-to-day operations of office including internal budget, processes citizen complaints, provides accurate information to the public and maintains files, service request log and records both paper and electronic.
- Assists in policy and strategy recommendations to the Board including; but not limited to, CB9 Capital and Expense budgets of NYC, and executes Board policies.
- Resolves problems and assures delivery of city services. Processes constituent complaints relating to services provided by municipal agencies within the district, and reports such complaints (written and/or verbal) to the Community Board.
- Assists in monthly District Service Cabinet meeting, which includes establishing the agenda and creating and preparing reports.
- Must be able to attend monthly Board meetings and committee meetings as needed, which are scheduled in the evening; and must also attend occasional weekend events as well.
- Establishes and maintains a working relationship with elected officials and their representatives, city agencies, nonprofit organizations, places of worship, businesses and all other community groups and agencies.
- Organizes monthly meetings of the Board and its Committees, participating in all full Board meetings
and in Committee meetings as needed, including evening meetings;
- Develops relationships with community partners and fosters collaborations to further the boards
mission;
- Represents the Board as needed at public meetings, hearings, and at working sessions with city
agencies and elected officials;
- Writes letters and resolutions in support of Bronx CB 9 positions; maintains communication
among Board members, community members and others using postal mailings and email, and
administer the Bronx CB 9 social media/newsletters;
- Assists in Monitoring community conditions and supervises the preparation of status reports,
SLA licenses and other applications, and handles citizen complaints from intake to resolution;
- Assists the District Manager in supervising office staff and interns, evaluations, directives, motivating staff, directing office operations, administering the office budget, research and any other duties assigned;
- Must be able to work well with a diverse community.
- New York City residency required, if employed by New York City for less than 2 years.
Typical Tasks
- Assists Board in the coordination of service delivery within the community district.
- May participate at meetings of the District Service Cabinet and represents the District Manager at such meetings.
- May attend Community Board meetings and represent Board at such meetings. Reports on issues concerning, and actions taken at District Service Cabinet meetings and on other relevant issues.
- Processes complaints from residents of the community district relating to services provided by municipal agencies within the community district; communicates with local agency offices to resolve such complaints; may prepare reports on problems and actions taken.
- Assists the Managers in analyzing agency budget.
- Assists in the analysis of service statements of agency objectives, priorities, programs and projected activities within the community district.
- Conducts investigations on services needed by the community district and on other problems and projects related to the district.
- Performs responsible work in connection with the administration of the community district office.
- May supervise interns of the district office.
Qualifications
Qualification Requirements
1. High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to duties described above; or
2. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to 1 above.
