Position Description District Sign Technician I: Performs entry-level transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records of signs and materials and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and standard practices and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.
District Sign Technician II & III: Performs skilled transportation realted work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records, ordering of signs and materials, and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.Essential Duties:
District Sign Technician I: - Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products
- Issues signs to maintenance sections/transportation crews; uses tools and equipment and moced signs and related materials
- Operates radios
- Performs and maintains inventory of signs
- Performs preventative maintenance on sign truck
- Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other department guidance
- Assists transportation maintnenace cres with maintnenace related work as requires; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
District Sign Technician II: The above and: - Orders supplies and materials from district shop
- Conducts nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure refelcitivity of signs, deliniators, stripping, and retroreflective pavement markers (RPMs)
- Inspects roadways to identify sign and deliniator defencies and recommend repairs
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
District Sign Technician III: The above and: - May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
- Trains other technicians on sign installation and safety procedures
- Issues signs to maitnenance sections/transportation crews; uses tools and equipment and moves signs and realted materials
- Maintains expense records and inventory of materials, supplies and equipment
- Mixes and places concrete for sign support foundations; moves cement bags and other items related to these duties
- Operates a boom and bucket truck and/or specialized sign truck to install roadway signs
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: District Sign Tech I-III: None in formal education. Experience: District Sign Tech I: None (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part time equivalent)District Sign Tech II:
1 year sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part time equivalent)District Sign Tech III:
2 years sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part time equivalent)Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class A CDL, within 180 calendar days from date of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard har, or other device
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
- Climbing- ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
- Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to rest on knee(s)
- Standing-prolonged periods of time
