Education Support Professionals (ESP/Classified) - Position - Groundskeeping Job Number 200####### Start Date Open Date 09/23/2024 Closing Date DISTRICT-WIDE GROUNDS MAINTAINER ISUMMARY DESCRIPTIONUnder supervision, performs maintenance and gardening work of routine difficulty on District grounds, athletic fields, and outside facilities. Incumbent performs related work as required.May be assigned to any early morning, morning, day or evening shift.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThe District Grounds Maintainer classification differs from the Groundskeeper I classification in that the District Grounds Maintainer performs landscape work at all District sites within Washoe County School District.EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIESPlants, mows, trims, weeds, fertilizes and waters lawns, flower beds and fields; cuts and lays sod; trims shrubs, hedges and trees; sprays weeds with herbicides, sweeps, or removes snow from walkways, drives, parking areas, rakes or vacuums leaves; and does general ground cleaning by gathering trash and debris, district-wide; cleans and repairs or replaces sprinkler heads; assists in installing or repairing sprinkler systems; repairs fences, resets fence posts and fastens wire; mixes cement and installs signs and posts; patches asphalt areas and installs parking bumpers; paint traffic and parking marks on curbs, drives and parking lots; assembles, installs, safety checks and repairs playground and athletic equipment; resurfaces and marks tracks and athletic fields for games and practices; levels and repacks track areas; and may be assigned to travel throughout the district inspecting and repairing all outside school playground equipment; may perform minor carpentry or painting on signs, bleachers, press boxes, and athletic equipment; may assist in laying cement for walkways, curbs, and gutters; operates mowers, tractors, backhoes, trucks and related equipment and machinery; loads and transports equipment, supplies and debris; performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs on small engines; may be called upon on off-hours for school emergencies, such as burglaries, vandalism, fires, snow removal, equipment failures, flooding, etc.; assist other trades, excavating and digging trenches, and holes; assist high school groundskeepers when required; operates sanding and plow equipment district-wide; performs excavating duties on buildings and grounds; trains new groundskeepers; and performs playground inspections.EMPLOYMENT STANDARDSEducation/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
  • One (1) year of gardening or grounds keeping experience.
  • Knowledge of: Basic gardening, pruning and landscaping methods and materials; use of gardening tools, machinery and equipment; and lawn sprinkling systems.Skill at: Working independently; understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions; performing heavy manual labor under adverse conditions; reading, understanding and working from blueprints; and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.Licenses and Certificates: Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Nevada State Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).Special Considerations: At the following schools (Damonte Ranch HS, Reed HS, Reno HS, Shaw MS, Double Diamond ES), reclaimed/effluent water is used, which requires that specific safety procedures be observed. Employees assigned to these facilities are required to remain current on the following vaccinations: Typhoid, Hepatitis A and Tetanus. Additional Job Information This is a 40 hour per week, 260 day position.     Temporary employees working less than 6 months do not receive benefits. New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting.
