OTTUMWA COMMUNITY SCHOOLSOttumwa, IowaPOSITION TITLE: Diversity Advocate, Gateway/EvansREPORTS TO: Director of Student SupportsQUALIFICATIONS:+ Degree from a four-year accredited college or university in education, social work, human services or related field preferred.+ Bilingual required. Preferred fluent in both English and Spanish, Marshallese, Chuukese, Burmese, French, etc.+ Experience working in a public-school setting preferred.+ Knowledge of language acquisition and district-level assessments.+ Demonstrate ability to collaborate with district staff and community agencies.+ Ability to develop effective working relationships with migrant students and their families, district staff, and community.+ Demonstrate initiative and creativity and willing to work flexible hours to accommodate the needs of migrant students and families.+ Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS :+ Must be proficient in English and another language frequently spoken in Ottumwa Schools+ Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.+ Must be proficient in technology and with Google Docs, Calendar and Sheets.+ Must be knowledgeable of community resources; vocational, health, etc.+ Must demonstrate the ability to work with groups and/or individuals from diverse backgrounds.+ Must have excellent organizational skills.+ Must be knowledgeable of data collection processes.+ Must be willing to work collaboratively with ELL teachers and fellow Diversity Advocates to plan and implement parent and/or family meetings.+ Must demonstrate ability to work well in a team setting.+ Must have the ability to relate to parents, students, and community members who come from diverse backgrounds.+ Must be willing to travel in-district, including a valid driver's license.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:+ Communicate with newly identified migrant students, out-of-school youth, or migrant families to identify services needed to overcome obstacles of migrant lifestyle to achieve education goals.+ Assist families with enrolling in programs that provide needed services by helping to overcome barriers such as transportation, transcripts, immunizations, etc.+ Provide information and/or direct services to improve academic success.+ Monitor academic status of migrant students.+ Serve as a language conduit between, students, families, district staff, and community as needed (to include both interpreter and translation services).+ Facilitate meetings with Migrant family members.+ Maintain accurate records and up to date Google Calendar schedules.+ Attend meetings and in-services as requested by Director of Student Supports and meet as a Diversity Advocates team on a monthly basis.+ Help to facilitate cultural understanding.+ Other duties as assigned.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Never0%Occasional1-32%Frequent33-66%Constant67%+ A.StandingXB.WalkingXC.SittingXD.Bending/StoopingXE.Reaching/Pushing/PullingXF.Climbing/StairsXG.DrivingXH.Lifting (10 lbs.)XI.Carrying (20 feet)XJ.Manual Dexterity TasksTelephoneXComputerXOtherK.Working ConditionsInsideXOutsideXExtremes ofTemperature/HumidityXAll of the above duties and responsibilities are essential job functions subject to reasonable accommodation.
