Company website: Summary: - The intern will apply general building practices to hands-on zero-carbon home construction that is in progress.
- The hands-on building will expand the intern's knowledge of green home building and techniques that will prepare him/her for working with other trades in the construction business, and could prepare them for completing a Michigan builders license.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Use various materials such as siding and trim, hardwood flooring, wood doors and trim, custom-made cabinetry, tile. Additionally could be asked to work preparing concrete structures, excavation, solar PV components, PEX plumbing, heat pumps and more in residential multi-family structures.
Typical Carpenter Responsibilities:
- Framing walls, porches and decks.
- Fitting and installing trim, doors, stairs and hardware.
- Measuring, cutting, and joining materials made of wood or wood substitutes.
- Reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings and sketches.
- Installing hardwood flooring.
- Help installing foundations and earthwork.
- Exterior siding and trim
- Installing radiant floor heating, PEX plumbing and domestic water supply systems
- Installing ducting, ventilation equipment and split system heat pumps.
- Participating in tours for the public and industry professionals
Qualifications: - Intern must be able to learn to read building plans.
- Carpenters must know how to use power tools for cutting and shaping wood components
- Basic knowledge of electrical wiring, plumbing and/or mechanical systems is a plus.
- Ability to problem-solve, writing down and obtaining approval for solutions before installing them.
- Good at organizing work spaces and job sites; clean and safe work environments.

If the SkillBridge candidate and Volta Homes want to continue working together after the internship, the intern could fill a carpenter position at approximately $50K - $70K per year, depending on skills and qualifications.Other: Not all internships include certification training by Vets2PM, as many host companies include their own internship-focused training instead.
