Job Description:
Safety/Security Sensitive Designation:This is a safety/security sensitive position for purposes of the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment.* Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of their own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive.* Safely deliver crew members and equipment to the scene of all types of emergencies - EMS, Fire, Haz-mat, motor vehicle accidents, extrication; aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF), technical rescue and aerial operations.* Check all equipment. Perform minor maintenance on the apparatus and equipment and record any apparatus maintenance problems.* Fill in as Captain when assigned.* Familiarity with buildings and streets in immediate coverage area and outlying areas of the City.* Mentor and assist in training of less experienced Driver/Operators and Firefighters.* Operate the pumps and deliver water supply, operate aerial devices, and other equipment at working fires.* Perform recordkeeping and completion of computer documentation including incident reports, daily truck checks, time clock recording and all other required reports.* Provide public education and station tours.* Assist with annual certification testing including pump, hose, and ladder tests.* Respond to common inquiries from citizens, other fire department and emergency personnel, schools, civic organizations, city employees and visitors.* Regularly participate in either group or self-directed physical fitness activities.* Perform other related duties as required or assigned.ESSENTIAL DUTIES When Assigned as Captain include the following:* Directly supervise 2-3 firefighting staff. Responsibilities may include interviewing, training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.* Fill the role of incident or division command at emergency scenes.* Secondary duties as assigned.* High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus completion of three (3) years of continuous service at the rank of Fire Fighter, with the Fayetteville Fire Department, and has successfully completed the IFSAC Driver/Operator program, preceding the date of the written promotional examination. A transcript from an accredited institution documenting a minimum of twelve (12) hours of completed college coursework with at least a C average may substitute for a high school diploma or GED certificate. The IFSAC Instructor-I course will also be required after December 31, 2022.* Must possess a valid driver's license.* Necessary certificates, licenses and registrations include: IFSAC Firefighter I and II, and must maintain EMT certification* IFSAC Driver/Operator program.* Must possess the ability to communicate effectively both orally and written often under adverse conditions; possess good judgment; good powers of observation and memory.* Ability to react quickly and effectively in all emergencies, natural or man-caused disasters.* Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from business managers and owners, and the general public.* Must be proficient in the use of radio communication equipment, fire trucks, equipment, apparatus, vehicle extrication equipment, chainsaw, concrete saw, fire pumps/hoses, electrical generators, ventilation fans, hand tools and other related equipment.* Must be proficient in office skills including the use of computers, records management systems, and other related software.* Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management and staff.* Ability to interpret a variety of city, county, state and federal laws making decisions and taking action quickly.* While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.* While performing the functions of this job, the employee is exposed to extremes in weather conditions; possible injury while riding on emergency vehicles or operating department equipment; hazards inherent to fire, hazardous materials, special rescue scene situations and emergency medical incidents. The noise level in the working environment is frequently loud. Mental stress generated by involvement in life and death situations; cardiovascular stress generated by movement from resting to highly active states.
