MTA will consider exceptions for religious and medical reasons, where appropriate. Fully vaccinated means you must have both doses of a 2-dose vaccine and two weeks have elapsed since the second dose, or have received 1 dose of a 1-dose vaccine and two weeks have elapsed since the dose. Proof of your vaccination status in the form of a CDC vaccine card must be submitted prior to your start date. Compensation: Salary: Drug & Alcohol Technician I: $53,396 - $63,539 (Represented DC-37) Responsibilities: Under direct supervision and administrative direction, performs clinical laboratory procedures of limited to moderate technical difficulty such as administering drug and alcohol breath tests and saliva tests-all of which are carried out in compliance with U.S. Department of Transportation regulations and New York City Transit Drug and Alcohol policies. There are three assignment levels within this title: Drug and Alcohol Technician I, II, and III. All personnel perform related work such as:
  • Collect urine specimens for toxicological and routine analysis.
  • Administer breath and saliva tests.
  • Obtain blood specimens for alcohol analysis and lead tests.
  • Label, store, and ship completed specimens.
  • Dispose of completed specimens.
Please note : The incumbent is required to drive a motor vehicle to travel to various Medical Assessment Center locations. Education and Experience:
  • A high school diploma or its educational equivalent and a certificate of completion in a recognized training program in phlebotomy, medical technology or medical assistant or a closely related field; plus two (2) years of full-time experience primarily performing phlebotomy work; or
  • An Associate degree from an accredited college with a major (at least 16 credits) in medical technology, medical assistant or a closely related field of study, plus one (1) year of experience as described in 1 (a) above.
  • License Requirement At the time of appointment, incumbents must possess a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York with no restrictions which would preclude the performance of duties as a Drug and Alcohol Technician. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment. Desired Skills:
    • Experience performing U.S. DOT drug and alcohol specimen collections including preparation of chain of custody forms, highly desired.
    • Experience with the navigation and use of complex medical databases.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Minimum of three years' experience in Phlebotomy.
    • Must be flexible to work various hours.
