The Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant provides support to the Head Start program team in identifying and securing the needed support for families of children experiencing mental health challenges.

  • Provides expertise to the program through observations, assessments, and consultative support.
  • Provides intervention for children and families that will promote social and emotional development using evidenced based models.
  • Adhere to an evidenced-based social work model, principles, and practices.
  • Provide on-site staff consultation.
  • Meet with Head Start staff members to build understanding and capacity to identify and support children with behavioral and mental health concerns.
  • Assist Early Learning team to develop appropriate behavioral strategies to support children with challenging behaviors in the classroom. Conduct classroom, center-based, and Home-based (for Home-based children only) child observations to assess individual needs of children as well as the overall classroom environment, assess interpersonal interactions and determine if additional Mental Health support/resources are needed to meet child's needs.
  • Provide parents with education regarding mental health concerns and emotional wellness and support them in needed mental health interventions.
  • Document all screenings, assessments, and consultations in appropriate database.
  • Prepare and maintain timely documentation, reports, and records in accordance with agency, state accreditation, and other requirements.

Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling or related degree.
  • Clinical license preferred; license eligibility required.
  • Experience with child behavioral and mental health concerns, preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of mental health in young children ages birth to five years.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers and parents.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate and confidential records.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with best practices in school-based therapy
  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or Creole, desirable.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to the cultural differences present among the agency's service population.
  • Must have valid driver's license, which meets the requirements of the agency's insurance carrier.
