Job Title: Early Childhood Special Education Teacher (Various Elementary Schools)FLSA Status: Exempt Job SummaryThe Early Childhood Special Education Teacher is responsible for creating a classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth of every student; establishing effective rapport with students; motivating students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for becoming a responsible citizen in accordance with each pupil's ability; and to establish good relationships with parents and other staff within the classroom and collaborates with related service providers and therapists.Essential Duties Classroom Operations
  • Plans and arranges an environment for children which is supportive and appropriate to meet their needs, consistent with the National Association for the Education of young Children's (NAEYC) Developmentally Appropriate Practices and the Creative Curriculum guidelines.
  • Plans a daily schedule and weekly lesson plan creating a varied and wide-range of learning opportunities to meet the needs of all children within the classroom.
  • Collects data and documents children's developmental progress in a systematic manner; maintains a progress record for each child within an online assessment system.
  • Conducts both formal and informal assessments of children; reports assessment findings appropriately in formal written reports and in less formal communications with parents.
  • Involves Instructional Assistant in all aspects of planning and operating the classroom.
  • Develops and implements Individualized Education Program (IEPs).
  • Monitors student progress toward achieving instructional objectives and goals on the IEP's.
  • Safety and Sanitation
  • Follows safety and sanitation policies and procedures appropriately.
  • Assures that children are supervised at all times.
  • Models and encourages appropriate health and safety habits.
  • Consults and collaborates with school nurse regarding children's health needs.
  • Parent Contact and Involvement
  • Provides ongoing contact with families via telephone calls, notes, email and/or home visits, and maintains conferences and home visits per the program guidelines.
  • Other Duties
  • Performs other duties and takes on additional responsibilities as directed by supervisor.
  • Follows timelines and requirements for meeting IDEA guidelines.

    • Must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Early Childhood Special Education or a related field.
    • Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement.
    • Must possess ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
    • Regularly attends work on time as scheduled.
    • Is knowledgeable of and complies with School Division and Program policies and procedures as well as applicable laws and regulations.
    • Displays a positive, professional and respectful demeanor at all times toward employees, peers, professional contacts, parents, and others.
    • Respects the privacy of others by appropriately utilizing and protecting confidential or privileged information.
    • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, as well as work within a team environment.
    • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
    • Ability to follow tasks through to completion with strong attention to detail.
    • Seek clarification, ask questions when uncertain of position or task expectations.
    • Participates in learning experiences for personal growth and professional development to enhance professional skills and job satisfaction.
    • Analyzes and/or reports problems in area of responsibility as they occur and determines/implements solutions as appropriate.
    Working Conditions & Physical RequirementsMust have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.Work EnvironmentThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
