Job Summary This position is responsible for warmly assisting patients, family members, and visitors in the Emergency Department. Provides direction and information regarding internal Hospital services. Is an ambassador of Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center, cultivating an atmosphere of courtesy, respect, empathy, dignity, and optimism; thereby creating a favorable impression of the Hospital and its mission. Demonstrates knowledge of developmental needs of patient population specific to that department. (Patient population is defined in each department's Scope of Practice.) Qualifications Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent or training/experience in customer service preferred. CPR Provider-C required within 30 days of hire. Training: One week orientation with preceptor. Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Excellent communication skills. Must be able to function under stressful situations. Maturity and human relations skills are essential. Must be able to read, write, and comprehend written and verbal information. Must be able to use principles of good grammar. Must be skilled in managing situations and persons under extreme stress. Must be constantly alert to unsafe and potentially threatening and harmful conditions. Must be alert and ready to act when unusual situations occur. Ability to make routine decisions following established policy and procedures. Maintains strict confidentiality. Familiarity with location of other departments in the Hospital and knowledge of established Hospital regulations, policies, and procedures. Ability to deal with a large variety of people. Successful completion of the skills checklist within 60 days. Performance Requirements Responsibilities: Assessing needs of patients and family members and responding appropriately. Making rounds within the Emergency Department including patient rooms and the waiting room, including hourly rounding, and documenting pertinent information into the patient's chart. Assist nursing with obtaining urine and stool specimens. Perform EKGs within 10 minutes of patient's arrival to department. Place patients on cardiac monitoring system including NIBP and pulse oximetry. Transport non-telemetry patients to appropriate hospital unit upon admission. Performs simple wound care including cleaning and irrigating of simple lacerations. Ambulate patients as ordered by physician. Assist nursing with procedures including but not limited to: IV insertion, catheter insertion, enema administration. Perform incontinence care. Obtain vital signs when requested by nursing, including discharge vital signs and orthostatic vital signs. Perform high-touch cleaning of patient rooms after discharge including preparing room for next patient. Assist with stocking of patient rooms and clean utility room. Providing directions and information regarding internal Hospital services. Providing wheelchair assistance and transportation of discharged patients as appropriate. Keeping immediate work area safe for patients, visitors, and employees. Requesting assistance from appropriate ancillary departments to maintain aesthetics and cleanliness of the Department. Performing other logically associated duties as directed by the Director of Emergency Services and House Supervision. Physical Demands: This position requires standing or walking for major portion of the shift. Visual, auditory, and speech acuity essential for talking/communicating with a diverse population. May require lifting in excess of 50 lbs with much pulling, pushing, and lifting required. May be exposed to disagreeable situations. May come in contact with hazardous health conditions; however, if proper procedure is followed no harm should come to employee. Special Demands: Well-developed communication skills. A good memory for details. Highly organized and able to effectively manage time. Ability to prioritize tasks utilizing critical thinking. Works in an unstructured independent environment with supervision available (Director Emergency Services, House Supervisor). Displays accuracy, tactfulness, initiative, and sound judgment. Demonstrates ability to work cooperatively with others. Always courteous and patient. Willingness and ability to adapt work schedule to meet the demands of the department.
